Iman Shumpert: Gone! Thank God!

As the dust begins to settle on 2014-2015 and the league looks ahead to another offseason, however, it seems there was more to Shumpert’s offensive woes than met the eye. According to Chris Haynes of the Northeast Ohio Media Group, the Cavaliers’ guard was shot up with painkillers during the championship series to stave off effects of shoulder and groin injuries.

[Shumpert] was shot up with painkillers before Game 4 of the NBA Finals in order to continue playing through the excruciating pain of a bruised shoulder, a source revealed, and he may have been injected more than once during the Finals.

[…]

Though he was still in agonizing discomfort, he returned to the game in the second quarter. An MRI exam the next morning confirmed the bruise. Had it been the regular season, I’m told he would have been sidelined 2-3 weeks.

Shumpert re-injured his left shoulder – he originally dislocated as member of the New York Knicks in November – during the first quarter of Game 3 after taking a hard screen from Draymond Green. Though he went to the locker room for evaluation and stayed there for a significant amount of time, he returned to the game in the second quarter. The Georgia Tech product was already limited by a groin stain he suffered in the second round versus the Chicago Bulls, too.

Fortunately, Shumpert won’t require summer surgery on either of his injuries, a major relief considering the financial stakes at hand come next month. As a plus defender with respectable three-point range and at least some room for improvement, he’s due a major pay raise – and it will likely come from the Cavaliers.

General Manager David Griffin is extremely fond of Shumpert and plans to retain him. He loves his work ethic and competitive edge, but so do others.

Obvious reason why his offense floundered. I'm a big Shumpert fan and this makes me more of a fan.
Only concern is sign him long term and we have 3 big pieces who are fragile

Reading all these reports only leads me to believe that we'll be unbreakable next season.

Look what we accomplished against all the odds. The dice will roll in our favor next season - a healthy Shump, Irving & Love is going to depend on luck and adequate player management. With added depth, we should be able to correct any/all of the flaws that played some part in contributing to the anomaly that was simultaneously damaging injuries to nearly all our key pieces.

Shump isn't intended to be a main scoring threat for this team.

Kyrie and Love are, neither played.

Everyone could of told you he was injured

Lol at warriors just handed a title cuz of injuries

Injured but still locked up Klay Thompson for the most part.

Its amazing really. No Kyrie, no Kevin, injured Shump. However, you could make the case if JR just played as well as he did against the Hawks we still may have won that series.

I-77 and a few others can just STFU about Shumpert.

This guy has the heart of soul of a lion

Wish he could of won a ring with us

Can't be mad if a role player takes the money

He gave us all he had

He's gonna take the money....that we pay him.

The Cavs are going to match any offer sheet Shump gets up to about the $12 million a year range. I expect him to end up getting something like 4 years, 42 million. It's not a bad deal either if he's going to be that good defensively while also being able to hit the open 3 and do a little bit off the dribble.

I wonder why Broussard threw that little FYI in there. Is that someone from LeBron’s camp saying “Cavs better match any offer Shump gets or else”?

Maybe but realistically we have no other option. Smith is a guy you can let go, TT and Shump really are not.

Shumpert's defensive versatility is so difficult to find on the open market. It allows LeBron to take the lesser wing player on that end of the floor, letting him roam for blocks and steals and also conserving energy for his offensive game. Shump also has the ability to guard PG's, which lets us hide Kyrie on lesser SG's if he has a poor defensive matchup. Again, an incredibly valuable luxury.

True perimeter defenders like Shump are very hard to find. Ones that are only 25? Impossible. Of our 3 role playing FA's, he's the hardest to replace IMO and given his impact on LeBron / Kyrie, from a defensive perspective, he's a no brainer to match just about anything IMO.

Couldn't agree more with this. Shump has potential to be an elite 3 and D guy. He just turned 25, and with the Cavs cap situation, they aren't going to get a guy better than him with his upside. Gotta bite the bullet and re-up with him.
