Johnny Manziel: Swan Won't Return His Calls

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They're not mutually exclusive terms. A QB can be both shitty and a bridge QB at the same time.

If you really don't know, a bridge QB is one that is supposed to serve you from time "X" (Now) until you get to time "Y" where a long-term solution (read: QB) is implemented (via draft, trade, FA signing, or internal development).

So, technically speaking, Tim Couch should still be serving as our Bridge QB!

Man, that would have been so much easier.

The Browns thought process, however misguided it may be, is that the offensive line, running game and defense as a whole should be good enough to keep the team competitive in every game provided the QB isn't a turnover machine.

The idea is the same one the Browns used the first half of year when they ran the ball a ton, forced turnovers on defense and Hoyer managed to only throw 4 INTs in the first 9 games (6-3 record). Mack's injury helped torpedo the running game, Hoyer started turning it over a lot more and the defense got a lot leakier once the offense started playing worse.

Clearly they think McCown can be a caretaker more effectively than Manziel, thus he's getting the job without a fight.

The only way this offense can be successful is if these two things happen:

1. The offense runs through Duke Johnson, Isaiah Crowell and Terrence West. Not just the running game, but getting them multiple touches in the passing game to keep defenders off the QB.

2. The QBs ability to limit turnovers.

The defense will be good enough to win, but I'm not confident in this team's ability to get either #1 or #2 done.

I don't subscribe to the philosophy that they should throw Manziel out there to sink or swim with either outcome being just fine. I can't see how the Browns brain trust would be on board with that either.

They are working hard to build a culture here. Laugh it off and make jokes all you want about "play like a Brown" but it's an organizational philosophy that makes sense. They are trying to create an identity that not only the city and fans can embrace but the players and other NFL talent can as well. If Manziel is terrible and the staff knows it, then so do the players. Therefore, playing him sends the exact opposite message the organization is working so hard to get across.

If he plays this year it's because he's either earned it or he's the next man up due to injury/ineffective play from McCown.

This.. I want to be supporting this, not the exhausted comedy routine. It is certainly their responsibility to curb it by giving fans something to root for, but I feel like there's such a legion already constantly negative that it appeases me to be supportive.

A bridge quarterback is a great idea when you don't have a top 10 QB. Running a 29 year old bridge quarterback out of town for one with a worse track record and five years older is a bad idea.

The Houston Chronicle's John McClain expects Brian Hoyer to be the Texans' Week 1 starting quarterback.

McClain is one of the longest-tenured writers on the Texans beat, and on any NFL beat for that matter. McClain calls Hoyer "such a natural" in coach Bill O'Brien's system, which gives the quarterback "a lot of freedom at the line." It doesn't say much for Ryan Mallett that Hoyer stands a good chance of beating him out. McClain says Hoyer has been "smooth, smart, and accurate" in practice, and "looks like he's been in the system for years." Jun 16 - 3:38 PM

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle projects the Texans to use the No. 1 overall pick on Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel.
Mock drafts can almost always be crumpled up and thrown away as garbage. But this projection is notable because McClain is nationally respected and plugged in to all things Texans. He continues to be staunch in his belief that the team will be taking a quarterback at No. 1 overall despite the recent push for South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney. The draft is four weeks from Thursday.

If one were ever to use the old button, the article about Manziel's draft stock is right up there...

Running a 31 year old bridge quarterback out of town for one with a worse track record and five years older is a bad idea.

I thought Hoyer made it pretty clear that he didn' t consider himself a bridge quarterback with the Browns. He believed that he had earned the right to be considered the long-term solution without having to repeatedly be evaluated, and without looking over his shoulder or being expected.to help groom a replacement.

Whether he was right or wrong doesn't matter. What matters is that he was ill-suited to be kept here as a bridge guy, particularly when the Browns were considering drafting another young QB.

Hoyer thought he needed to be beaten out to be the starting quarterback, in the offseason the front office avoided revealing the illegal texts publically, then they signed McCown and promoted his willingness to "be a starter or a backup."

I'm comfortable saying that Hoyer's approach to challenge Manziel to take the job from him is what a bridge quarterback should do, if the young quarterback isn't mentally fragile.

Let's see how it plays out. I have no plans to sugarcoat what I've seen from the Browns. If you don't like it, read other people's opinions.

Hoyer is better than McCown, yeah. But it really does not matter which is on the roster. Browns won't go anywhere with either of them playing QB. Unless McCown is bad enough to lead his team to the #1 pick for a 2nd straight season...

Here's to hoping he doesn't overachieve in the first half of the season.

I'm not so sure Hoyer is better than McCown.

Is McCown a world beater? Absolutely not. He's a bottom tier QB and probably shouldn't be a starter in most situations. However; Hoyer is no better IMO. They are in the same tier of QBs in my opinion and McCown might actually be slightly better. This season will give us an idea.

There are going to be a handful of good QB's in the draft next year I wouldn't mind taking. But some of you are acting like we need to only win 2 games to take Jones #1 overall!! I don't know about some of you, but I would be pissed if that happened.

I know some of you are already going into the season thinking we will get a top 3 pick in the draft and people like b00b are already burning their Manziel fatheads & bobbleheads he has in his play area, but I wouldn't mind going in and winning a decent amount of games, pushing for playoffs and still getting a tall, pocket passing QB in mid-1st.

I know it's the Browns & woe is me, but you still gotta keep the faith up! We literally just need DECENT QB play and everything should be fine. Can one of them be decent? Probably not, but I am sure as fuck gunnin' for it!

:cheering:

It's early, but IMO this will be a good year to get a toolsy QB outside of the Top 5.

There are plenty of intriguing guys with good arms and the right skill-set, but very very few finished products. Obviously, some guys are likely to take a large jump and set themselves apart, but I think this class may be relatively deep.
