First, let me just say that I'm about as open to changing my opinion as you.
Fair enough. That's good.
In this case, though, the guy wasn't toeing the moral/legal line. I don't think there is intent there to break a law or bang a teenager.
Because?
Who decides this? A jury -- at a felony rape trial??
I mean, you're still putting him in danger by this law even existing when he's clearly done nothing wrong. Simply being charged with a felony is a permanently life-altering event, regardless of conviction.
Is the law perfect? No..
But it's literally destroying the lives of many young adults. There was just a 19-year old who got years, plus the sex registry, for having sex with a 16-year old girl he met at a party. He was a senior, she was a junior.
Rape laws are about consent. Any of this other shit should not be under the rape statutes. Make a new law that says 16-year olds cannot engage in sex and prosecute both parties; see how well that goes. But the attacker/victim relationship here is nonexistent. It is not a criminal act.
I mean, people get put on that same predator list for taking a piss outside and getting caught.
Exactly right.
IMO, the law is erring on the side of caution and I'm, for the most part, okay with that.
That means you are okay with justice not being served, and innocent lives being ruined - over something as simple as sex. You realize that right?
