Crack cocaine is very similar to "free base" from the 70's. Theoretically speaking, there's a clear chemical difference. Practically speaking crack has a different high and a more addictive nature. And my own personal experience is that both crack and coke will alter a person over time, but crack does it faster, more severely, and more irrevocably.
According to the Google, crack is just powder cocaine mixed with water and baking soda and then hardened and smoked. Smoking it creates a higher propensity for dependence, according to various studies. Supposedly the high kicks in after about twenty seconds, as opposed to ten to twenty minutes when snorted.
I've only ever tried the powdered form, though, so I'm not exactly a subject matter expert. I'd give powder cocaine two thumbs up. It's especially fun when mixed with alcohol. Not as in mixing the coke directly with alcohol. That would be silly. Getting drunk and then doing a couple of lines is what I'm talking about. Highly recommended.
