sorting out the defense?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Love played surprisingly well on defense for the most part in the celtics series and leading up to the playoffs, so I don't think we would've suffered greatly on that end if he was still healthy. We probably wouldn't be looking this dominant on that end, but is simply because it's where our focus needs to be, now that both our number 2 and 3 option has been effectively taken out. We would still dominate, perhaps even moreso than now, but it would be less by way of defense than offense.

Yeah, and maybe just giving different looks would help us. It seems to be Blatts MO to not let the offense get comfortable.

I do think Kyrie and Love are two guys that really need to continue to work on that end. I almost dont care if neither ever get better on O. I want them to improve their D. I think it could be a truly dominant team in that case.

I think both have made some major strides on D this year. I wonder how much of it is progress and how much is energy saved by bearing less load on O.
The more team-ball we play the more they'll be able to bring on D.

Our defense against most big men has been great. I think one of our constant struggles is defending the 1/5 pick and roll. Mozgov isn't fast enough and Tristan somehow always gets scored on even though his footwork isn't bad. What it seems to be is our guards aren't trying to push through the picks and just accepting the switch.

I think it is alarming the defense has improved so much with two of the big 3 hurt. Would we blow these teams out with Love or would we not be able to stop them?
Loves defense was actually good. Its more about the how bad Kyrie has been post injury and his overall regression in defense from his improved first half

Absolute opposite of Love whose defense got better as the season progressed

Rebounding aids a defense so much. This is why this Cavs team might end up champions this year. Despite losing Love and Andy Lebron has never had a front court this good. Our front court, which consisted of the back up PF and back up C, out played the Bulls deep and talented front court. Usually against the Bulls Lebron's front court gets destroyed like they did to Bosh and Joel Anthony.

Entirely an effort and mentality thing. Guys are gambling and losing or just flat out giving up. We aren't going to see them try and play good or even great defense until later in the season, I feel.

Also, the last two teams they've played have just lived in the paint. That needs to change.

Love, and TT can't even get rebounds, they look charmin soft. JR Smith has been horrendous defensively along with Kyrie. Our bench is old as shit and they look done and ready for retirement, so many issues they need to sort out.

Simple...scrap Longabardi's hybrid defense with a simpler one and stop giving teams 20 extra possessions a game off of turnovers.

WTF is Love & T.T doing under the basket?! Stand straight under the rim & keep both hands up at all times it is not that hard, I swear to god Delly had better technique of paint defense than Love/T.T combined, Tristan thinks he needs to block every shot to protect the rim, is this guy even being coached? the rule of verticallity is pretty fucking simple.

I have nothing to say about Love he isn't even trying to bother people on defense, back to his stat padding habits of standing around the rim hoping rebounds will magically fall into his lap instead of playing freaking defense. /end rant

Difficult to defend 7footers/long athletic bigmen with 2 barely athletic 6'7 players..

Problems definitely start with Love and TT. They let any decent post player back them into the paint and shoot a short jump hook and they put a hand up like its a jumpshot. Any decent big is gonna hit that hook at a good rate.

Rebounding - I dont even know whats going on. Love just looks weak and unathletic and idk why Tristan cant get defensive boards it makes no sense. The easy fix to this is have LeBron crash the paint hard but that only happens in the playoffs.

Basically LeBron is the ultimate bandaid but not as much in the regular season anymore.

Completely disagree.

For one, that many points in the paint isn't all on the bigs. It's on guards and wings allowing way too much penetration as well. 74 points means guards and wings had a free run at the rim all game, which is not on the bigs. Kyrie gave up way too much penetration to Rondo, which is a problem because he is a great passer off penetration, and gave up too much to Isaiah fucking Cannan. Same goes for whoever was on Butler. Got into the paint too much and was rewarded with 12 free throws.

Two, if you watch the game and look at what the Cavs were trying to do, they had a terrible game plan on how to defend this team tonight. They should have ICED every PnR, packed the paint, and forced them to win shooting jumpers (CHI is a terrible shooting team), but they stuck with the same dumb hybrid defense that's caused so many miscommunication's to this point in the season, and well, our defense still looks as pedestrian as it has all season up to this point. Also led to too many possessions where our bigs ended up on the perimeter while Kyrie or JR or Shump had to snag the rebound, which they didn't do a very good job of (starting wings and guards for CHI had 9 O boards).

Cavs need to simplify their defense. It's clear this group as a unit isn't grasping a complex defense with multiple calls and multiple PnR coverages any time soon, so simplify it.

We've got 2 "bigs" who are closer to 6'8 than 6'10 and are closer to 230 pounds than 250 pounds. That may be alright in the playoff but through out the course of a season it takes a toll on their body and our defense. We need someone bigger down there to take the punishment and at least be an obstacle to score over like moz was. Then once the playoffs come TT will be fresh and able to play with the energy he does. But I'm not sure he can do that if he plays like this all year. And our interior defense will struggle. Just like in 2014 when our defense because an open lane in a layup line.

The bigs are supposed to be the last line of defense, yes the guards/wings need to a much better job stopping penetration, but penetration will eventually happen no matter what, its the job of the bigs to make it hard for guards & wings to finish inside, its that simple, how can you disagree that the bigs have been beyond terrible in doing so?

I agree that the defensive gameplan looks horrible & it makes it harder for everybody, still doesn't excuse the horrible rim protection & lack of basic defensive technique while using the rule of vertically under the basket.
