With all the talk of the 2010 free agents......whats it look like in 2009? Im not really sure what kind of flexibilty we have in 2009 (im sure somebody can help me out with the numbers and what we can do) but Ilgauskas and Andy both have early termination options and Wally is unrestricted. Im sure even if we COULD get somebody in 09....we couldnt get anybody in 10 but im not sure. (correction:Andy has a player option) Here is the players on the market regardless.

Main players with ETO or PO
Kobe
Boozer
Rip
Jermaine
Okur
Turkoglu
Crawford
Curry
Korver
R.Davis

Main Restricted
Granger
Bynum
Lee
Moon
Nate Rob

Main Unrestricted
Marion
AI
Artest
Odom
Rasheed
J Kidd
Wilcox
Bibby
A.Miller

If we do have cap or get cap......I could see Artest as a possiblity if it doesn't workout in Houston and we could give him a one year contract. If we could sign AI or JKidd cheap(AI unlikely)...I would be all for it(we really dont need another point). Marion and Odom I couldnt see us going after.

P.S. (Another question I have),

Is it possible to terminate Zs contract and sign him to a new one cheaper?

I'm pretty sure that Z has a player option at the end of the season, but only he can initiate new contract negotiations. Even if Z felt the need to negotiate a new contract and asked for a third of the money he is getting now, we still wouldn't be able to afford most of those free agents under the cap rules. Also, i think there are rules which deal with how much of a decrease in pay a player can renegotiate into a contract. (He has to make a certain percentage of what he is making right now.)

We're not getting any of them. Any players we get before the summer of '10 will be via Wally or Ben, or another trade.

I think Artest makes about 7 mil now if im correct. He probably the only one we can afford.....if we got him we could sign him to a one year deal that way he can be comin off in 10'. Most teams will only try to sign ron for a one year deal anyway.

i think it would be a good idea to sign lee...he is a guy who fits any role of a big(2-4 spot) & most likely may come cheap but he is restricted so..

Why the hell would Artest sign a 1 year deal? That makes absolutely no sense.. I look for him to sign a nice 4-5 contract.

If the Lakers don't sign Bynum in a week is there any contract that we can offer that is feasible. That would be a move we could make that would be amazing.

The only shot we would have at any of these guys is if:

1) They are willing to play for the MLE

or

2) We work out a sign & trade which would be rather difficult.

Exactly, any contract we add to the books at this point, and I mean almost any, would kill our cap space in 2010. So no trading wally for anyone with longer than 2 year contract. (whats the point for the other team then) No trading Ben. Period. and, no resigning AV. We cannot use our mle next year wither. How many times do I have to type this in all of these fairy tale threads? We will not get Bosh or be players in the 2010 market. If we do, we will have a crappy team that Lebron will not want to resign with. Lets focus on who we can get via trade and use the mle.

Completely agree Lee you have shown me the light. Clearly two max contracts will leave us broke so we should get two medium (10-15mil) contracts and LBJ. That leaves us enough to sign a bench.

The only way to realisitcally get multiple max contracts is through trade or using birds rights on players they drafted. Its how we have Ben and Lebron. Its how the suns have 3 max contracts. Drafted Amare, while he was on a rookie contract, they signed Nash, then maxed out another player they drafted in marian, and traded him for another max contract in Shaq. If we let both Ben and Wally expire, we will have a hard time getting back a max contract player. Problem is ofcourse, only max players out their are flawed players like carter and ak47. This is why the draft is so important, and why alot of the more knowledgeable people keep mentionioning how bad it was that Ferry had almost no draft picks the first few years. You build a team through the draft, you use trades and free agency to find complimentry parts.

Even Boston had to draft the young talent the traded away to get kevin garnett. ray allen on the other hand is more in the flawed max contract department. To be honest, I would rther have carter than ray allen. A motiviated carter is still a top 5 sg in this league. One can hope a title possibility is motivation. Ray Allen was just rotting in Seatle before the trade, a new team can give a player a whole new outlook on life.

I have a question about the bird rights. If we don't sign LBJ first but sign say Bosh to the max, then sign our bench and starters then sign LBJ is that allowed or is his cap hold to high for that?

I agree VC is still a top 5 guy in this league and with Mo and Bron. He would get a worse PG and a better SF (NJ had Kidd and Jefferson) so in essence they just switched players for him to work with. He would do well here and get a ton of open looks nightly. The only difference is our point guard has room to grow, and our SF is the best player in the world which Kidd never was. I'm starting to swing the VC way, but i'd still like the defense AK47 brings to us.

Also can we buy out VC's contract if he isn't working out?
