2019 NBA Draft Lottery

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I disagree that a player's mental makeup and personality is something that good coaches can just wave away. They can perhaps affect it on the margins, and on occasion have success with a true knucklehead. But expecting a "good coach" to change someone's basic personality, or intelligence, etc. is unrealistic.

If on the other hand he failed adjusting to a role that didn't fit his game, that could be fixed.

You take the best pick available regardless. Sexton had a damn good rookie season and has the ethic to improve. The guy gets little respect here. I dont get it

Sexton's biggest issue is he isn't a true pg at this point and probably ever. He is more like a CJ McCullom. Thing is CJ is a really good sg and I have no problem with that level player with the 8th pick.

Because there is some position flexibility with Sexton, it allows you to grab a pg if you think best available and deal with the small back court with a better defensive front court.

Rebuilding is a 5 year thing in the NBA even if you draft right, no need to get crazy and not take best player available in year 2.

This seems like a mental issue and mental issues can be overcome, that's the point of having good coaches. If we still had ty lue or drew as our coach than I'd say no way to a player with those issues. With the 5th the cavs need to swing for the fences and draft for potential. My biggest question about cam is can coaching solve the problem?

Mental issues are pretty hard to overcome.

Ok, I’ve decided.

We trade out of the pick.

Hunter’s too slow and has bad handles. Hachimura’s a tweeter, and not a great shoot. Barrett can’t shoot. Culver can’t shoot. Reddish can’t shoot. And with don’t need another small guard.

Cool.

So who is going to trade up for all these small guards/guys that cannot shoot?

And what are you getting for all these guys who aren't good enough?

I haven’t quite figured that part out yet.

But I think it was PT Barnum who said, “There’s a sucker born every minute.”

Hachi is a better shooter than others under consideration:

Hachimura
41.7% on 3pt (small sample size)
73.9% on free throws
height 6'8" (wingspan 7'2")

Culver
30.4% on 3pt
70.7% on free throws
height 6'6" (wingspan 6'10")

Barrett
30.8% on 3pt
66.5% on free throws
height 6'7" (wingspan 6'10")

And he’s raw. He has upside, and a good work-ethic!
Let me add that Rui is strong as an ox and can take contact and has a natural feel in the post and mid range.

Barrett isn't a option anyways. And the key here is sample size. Hachimura barely shot any 3s so of course the percentages could look good. Culver shot 38 percent as a Freshmen on 4 attempts a game compared to shooting 40 percent on 1 attempt like Rui as a junior.

Whos to say which is the true Culver Freshman year where he was a knock down shooter or this year when he was given more to do and struggled at different points throughout the year.
Hachimura didn't even speak English in his freshmen year and look where he is now. That's an achievement in itself.

I like Hachi, but some mocks have him all over the place. Some even have him going after Brandon Clarke. And then what if the Lakers take him? Then, we really ARE stuck with the pu-pu platter.

That's a false statement. He spoke some English. In Japan, English is a mandatory class. He May not have been fluent in English but he could speak and understand the important things. Also not sure how that's relevant to a basketball conversation.

So I went on a deeper dive on Reddish. He seems to want to be a 3 point shooter. He doesn't pass up 3s for long 2s. I think Duke got him to go to the rim and use his size but I think that's the place he will have to be encouraged and developed. I think he will naturally gravitate to working on his 3 point shot. He seems to have a wide variety of ways to get off 3s, which might just need to be focused by coaching to get his 3 pt percentage up.

He has the handles to be special at 6'8. He just has to be willing to use his size inside and take more contact. He needs to expand his game at the rim. This is where the tricky part of developing him might be. He will lean on being a perimeter player if he is allowed to be. It might be best to split his time at PF and running the point to get him inside in the paint and slashing vs relying on shooting mainly 3s.

Not only would it cost him millions he could never earn back he risks injury and would have no idea where he would get drafted next year
I dont get it. He will have all the shoe deals and publicity he wants. Pels would be on tv all the time
No way he goes back to school

He cannot finish through contact and doesn't want to either. terrible rebounder for a guard forward as well. I would not take him at 5 regardless of skillset or potential because he is weak minded. If Cavs think he is the guy they really want take him at 8 I would not and would want (Doumbouya ,Little,Goga,Bol,Porter, etc). trading down to get ATL to give back 2020 pick rights and the 10th they own from Dallas 2019 .I would do that.

Just trade with the Hawks and go for the sure thing in Bitadze and someone else.

We need to stockpile on assets, and the drop off is negliable. Neither Culver or Hunter are special, even if one of them turns out to be great.

This draft is fairly deep, so we need to take advantage of it.

Who would the Hawks want at #5 to trade #8 and #10? It's basically a crap shoot after the big three.

Just because public perception might be that there’s no real difference between 4-15, doesn’t mean individual teams don’t have higher grades on certain prospects compared to others.

The Hawks might really like Culver or Hunter a lot, way more than they like Reddish, we don’t really know right now.

That reminds me of the talk that the Browns should have just picked Barkley at 1 in the 2018 NFL Draft because they’d be guaranteed a QB at 4. And that’s all well and good from a need filling perspective, but it also incorrectly assumes that the Browns would have the exact same grade on all three QBs prospects and would be willing to take the third one of the bunch.

The Hawks might not want to add two mid/late lotto picks to their roster anyway. They may have one of these guys ranked a cut above the rest and would just prefer to go with one guy they really like v. two guys they kind of like.
