2010 Indians Game Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Dude was the second best closer on the market and didn't come with a long-term deal.

Anyone saying they shouldn't have signed him is speaking in typical Cleveland fan hindsight fashion.

Agreed. Wood was coming off of a very good season and Indians fans were still having Joe Borowski nightmares. The Indians also parted ways with Joe Bo very early into the '08 season and were scrambling for a closer.

My only complaint with the Wood signing was the amount (it was just a mill/year shy of what K-Rod got from the Mets). But like you said, it made baseball sense at the time. It's just a shame it turned out to be the worst God-awful move the team has made in quite a while.

Shockingly, I actually blame KERRY WOOD for him being a complete failure....not the guy who signed him.

Novel thought, player accountability.

Although, there is certainly something to be said for moving to the AL and the effects that has (Not exactly the best time to make the argument though, seeing as how an NL shortstop just hit one to fucking Jupiter).

I buy the league difference for starting pitchers but for all other players I think it is negligible; Especially relievers, who never face pitchers batting. For the hitters, I don't see how switching leagues should ever affect them- most of the cavernous parks are in the NL. Point is, Kerry Wood has sucked b/c Kerry Wood's pitches are way too fucking hittable for a guy throwing in the mid-90s and who at one point knew how to get batters out.

I checked back on the old thread when we signed Wood, and not surprisingly I was on board with it. :chuckles:

In Gimme Some Mo's defense, he was not feeling it:

What can I say, I am a genius. :chuckles:

But honestly, that signing was a very big risk. I don't see how you can see it any other way. 10 mil a year for the Indians is A LOT of money and this guy has ALWAYS been injured. He had the one good year with the Cubs as a closer, and even then his ERA was still 3.26.

Comparing that to K-Rod (who was one of the best closers, if no the best closer in baseball around that time).... his ERA's were 2.24, 2.81, and 1.73 the previous 3 seasons.

And even comparing him to Fuentes the previous 2 season, Fuentes was better than Wood ERA wise (2.73 & 3.08).

I know we needed a closer at that time and we thought we could compete, but with a very limited payroll, I am not spending 10 mil a year on a closer unless it is a guy who has a long proven track record of success and is injury free.

I would have much rather tried signing a position player or a starting pitcher with that money.

The Tribe had only been a .500 team the year before, and that was with CC Sabathia for half the year. Adding a finishing touch like a closer doesn't work when you're losing bigger pieces to be able to afford him. Wood had only been the closer in Chicago for one year prior. He'd also been on the DL 12 times in 11 seasons. You cannot justify giving a guy like that a contract worth $10M. Take the money, put it towards signing one of your stars (Sabathia/Lee/Victor), make a cheap deal like the Chris Perez trade for your closer and hope he pans out. For a mid-level budget team to give a closer a contract worth 1/8 of their team's total payroll is a mismanagement of resources. Period.

Thinking Kerry Wood prevented the Indians from resigning Sabathia, Lee or even Victor is ridiculous. Period.

Actually, they had CC for half a year. :gap: And a big part of the first half collapse was another bullpen implosion, led by Joe Borowski. Shapiro felt he could survive a few young starters if he made the bullpen a strong point, so he signed Wood, who was regarded as the 2nd-best closer on the market after Frankie Rodriguez.

I see where Shapiro was coming from with the signing and I agreed at the time. The club had tried to go patchwork with the closer for several years before and it bit them in the ass every single year the club was a disappointment. He clearly saw 2009 as the last chance to contend, and so he threw all his weight behind Wood stabilizing the pen. Probably figured that even if the team would be in a sale mode in 2010, a healthy Wood would bring back a fair price. I don't think they expected him to have such a sharp regression in his ability to get hitters out.

Santana with a 2 run bomb. Is that now on base in every game or what?

We have a bright future with Santana, Choo, Fausto as some of our corner stones. Hopefully some other players can get going. cough*LaPorta*cough

Tribe with another disapointing loss tonight. At least they were kind of in this one- they actually led at one point. This is just shaping up to be as painful of a season as predicted. Oy...

Honestly, I don't remember a Tribe team that was this bad. The Royals are almost 5 games clear and the Orioles are catching up. At this point, they are borderline unwatchable. It's real depressing to think that 3 years ago this team was only a game from the World Series. Seems much longer than that.
