2012-2013 Indians Red Hot Offseason Thread (Bourn signed post 1940)

Re: 2012-2013 Indians Offseason Thread

Gonna pull this out of my local newspaper...

- Antonetti met for more than an hour with outspoken closer Chris Perez, whose comments throughout the season angered opponents, fans, and some of his teammates. "It comes from a good place with Chris," Antonetti said. "He's an extremely competitive guy that badly wants to be a contributor to a winning team. That's where it's coming from. I wish he would communicate his words differently and house he communicates those messages, but the root from where he's coming from is a deep-seated belief that he wants to be a part of a winning team."

- Antonetti said it's possible outfielder Grady Sizemore and designated hitter Travis Hafner could return to the club "but the level of investment would be very different than it was in the past." Sizemore missed all season with injuries and Hafner was limited to 66 games.

- No decisions have been made on club options for pitchers Ubaldo Jimenez or Roberto Hernandez.

They said on ESPN Cleveland that Sizemore possibly had another microfracture surgery and could be out 2013. No thanks don't want him back.

Does anybody think we'll hear an announcement today on who'll be manager? It not, when do u think the announcement will happen?

Re: 2012-2013 Indians Offseason Thread

Sizemore and Hafner should both probably retire. Hafner may have enough left to be a platoon DH bat against righties for another year or so, but with Sizemore, it just sounds like he's gonna be Greg Oden, except he actually got to play a few seasons.

As for the manager being announced today, I highly, highly doubt it.

Francona just got interviewed today so no. Expect it Monday or Tuesday.

Heard this earlier today: #Indians could name their new manager by the end of this weekend. Press conference Monday or Tuesday. We'll see...

Re: 2012-2013 Indians Offseason Thread

Francona is looking even more & more interested as the days go by:

Tom Withers‏@twithersAP

Francona on #Indians interview: "We exchanged a lot of ideas and it was really genuinely fun."

Tom Withers‏@twithersAP

Francona on intrigue of job with #Indians: "I'm excited to try to tackle challenges that come our way and do it together."

Tom Withers‏@twithersAP

Francona: "The fact that my dad (Tito) played here _ it's a good story. It's almost a family feeling." #Indians

Nick Camino‏@CaminoTribe

Terry Francona just said on "Baseball Tonight" he only has 2 options: 1. Manage the #Indians 2. Return to ESPN (Won't manage anywhere else).

Nick Camino‏@CaminoTribe

When asked about managing in the Central Division and having to face a guy like Verlander...Francona laughed saying, "Thanks!" #Interesting

Nick Camino‏@CaminoTribe

The more you hear Terry Francona talk and interact on the ESPN set...the more realistic it feels he will be the next manager of the #Indians

Who's it gonna be fellas? Looking more & more like it's Francona's to lose. Thoughts?

Re: 2012-2013 Indians Offseason Thread

Francona agreeing to terms tomorrow, presser Monday.

Just a guess.

Re: 2012-2013 Indians Offseason Thread

Why would he do this to his career?

Re: 2012-2013 Indians Offseason Thread

First and foremost, I'd decline the options of Ubaldo Jimenez, Fausto Carmona, and Travis Hafner. If they think they can get something for Ubaldo in a trade, pick up the option and deal him. But it's time to cut bait. Trade Rafael Perez as well.

This put the projected team payroll at around $42 M.

The Indians realistically will not have a shot at free agents like Zack Grienke. Instead, they should mostly focus on signing players to 1 or 2 year deals. With about $30 M to spend, this is how I'd try to dish it out.

1) Sign Melky Cabrera for 3 years, $21 M.

2) Sign Kevin Youkilis for 1 year, $5 M

3) Sign Brandon McCarthy for 3 years, $21 M

4) Sign Ervin Santana for 1 year, $8 M

This team would have a payroll around $69 M.

L-RF-Shin Soo Choo
S-LF-Melky Cabrera
S-SS-Asdrubal Cabrera
S-C-Carlos Santana
L-2B-Jason Kipnis
S-1B-Kevin Youkilis
L-CF-Michael Brantley
L-3B-Lonnie Chisenhall
R-DH-Russ Canzler

SP-Brandon McCarthy
SP-Justin Masterson
SP-Ervin Santana
SP-Carlos Carrasco
SP-Zack McCallister

RP-Scott Barnes
RP-Tony Sipp
RP-Esmil Rogers
RP-Cody Allen
RP-Nick Hagadone
SET-Vinnie Pestano
CL-Chris Perez

I don't think this will happen...but it's certainly possible to improve the team this offseason without committing big, long-term contracts to free agents.

I'd be down for all those moves....I could see a scenario where a former Red Sox player could come here on a paycut to play for Francona again
