2012 Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's definitely not too early to look at the 2012 draft. With the average fan preparing to endure another (possibly well) below .500 season, one gains hope by looking at the next year's draft, knowing that those players could possibly bring light to their team.

I have some questions though:

1. Which SF prospect for 2012 draft projects to be the best?
2. Which SG projects out to be the best? Beal? Rivers?
3. If the BPA when it is out turn to pick in the 2012 draft is another PF, do we take him?
4. Will the new CBA change the one-and-done rule to a two-and-done rule, stay the same or maybe get rid of it altogether?
5. Will players (especially US players) want to avoid the 2012 draft because of whatever CBA may be in place for 2012?

1. I personally like Quincy Miller (very Durant-like, but suffered an injury), MaCadoo (I think he will play the 3), and Barnes. I'm really turned off by Gilchrist's interviews and inconsistent outside shot (he would have great chemistry with Kyrie though because they played together at St. Pats).
2. I think it's hard to compare the two. If you need scoring, Rivers puts points up in a hurry but he's not very efficient. Beal would fit into a teams offensive flow well though. I also think Barnes could play the 2 guard, but I don't see as much potential in him.
3. I don't think so, we made a big commitment to Tristan Thompson. He could become a solid building-block.
4. I hope not, or next year will be terrible. Barnes, Sullinger, Perry, and no depth.
5. Hopefully not, that would set us back a year.
These are just my personal opinions. I've read scouting reports, watched all-star games, youtube, seen a few players on their highschool teams.

One thing I'm adding, I'm so glad we got Kyrie Irving this year because the PG's next year, Teague and Kabongo aren't even in the same stratosphere as Irving. The PG crop is very weak next year.

Thank you, you always kinda have to look ahead and project for the years to come. Assess where your team is at this year and the following years and see what the future crops of players by position look like. There isn't one player in this class that could take a team from high lottery into the playoffs, even with Irving and Thompson.

Obviously next year is another lottery year, and I hope a high lottery year at that. People debating Irving vs Williams to me was a terrible argument. Irving plays arguably the most crucial position in the game as well as being regarded by many as the BPA. He fits his position whereas you don't know if Williams will be a PF or a SF, so you don't have the security in knowing where he needs to play. Irving blows away Kabongo, Teague, and Wayns next year. While Anthony Davis is going to rank much higher than Williams this year. Plus you have Jones, Sullinger, and McAdoo that are also arguably going to rank higher after this season than Williams as well.

People saying you don't draft on need are delusional. I'm a firm believer on drafting the BPA but I also believe you need to find the best combination of Need vs Talent. To me finding a true PG like Irving is much more difficult than a tweener in Williams.

I'd really love Gilchrist next year, he's been very impressive in the times I've seen him and looks like he has that "Star" potential.

Anthony Davis to me is a mystery right now, is he done growing at 6'10" or is he going to hit 7 feet? Is he going to fill out and muscle up a bit or is he going to have the KG type build? I do like that he was a PG/SG before he grew 7 inches, he has great handles and a his passing was great, but now that he's 7 inches taller his passing is ELITE for a big man. My only worry is that with growing so much at one time his body may not be completely used to itself yet and there's a possibility for injury. He has very soft hands, and a great mix of power and finesse around the rim. I think he's going to be a LaMarcus Aldridge type, but his ceiling is much higher. He has some KG attributes as well but I'm not familiar enough with him to know his mentality. KG is a fucking lunatic. I'd like to see KG and MJ in a staring contest with the prize being a flaming bag of shit to see who blinks first. My guess is they would die with their eyes open. But anyway...can't wait to see how Davis does this year. That Kentucky team is loaded...nasty.

^ Pretty nasty...looked like Dikembe Mutumbo meets T-Mac in that highlight :chuckles:

Alright, so someone tell me about Andre Drummond. I have never heard of the guy until this thread. Is he moving onto college as of right now? I saw that he was undecided, and I'm not quite sure what year he is in high school even because some sites may be not updated. Also, he looks like an athletic monster with skill. That's about all I know. And some people were talking about him moving into the 2012 draft? Is this true?

Also, I'm still interested in what we do if a PF is the BPA like this Andre Drummond guy (although it looks like he could easily do C) or Anthony Davis? It seems to me like Anthony Davis would have the ball handling skills to play SF despite his length. And would Perry Jones and McAdoo be more suited for SF or PF?

I don't think we should even worry about it until we see what happens with this season.

So much can happen in a year in terms of trades, injuries, staying in school, etc. Prospects that we think are good now may not be what we think---let's see how this season goes before talking about next years draft.

Anyone up to Mason Plumlee if we can acquire a mid to late round 1st? He played some of those few Duke games with Kyrie.

Irving/Beal/Thompson/Plumlee would be a nice haul for two drafts.

We're probably gonna draft Sullinger since we love PF's so much

ok soooo i just saw drummond for the first time bc of this thread. how in the fuck do we get him

I love the 2012 draft on paper, but there's two things that could really kill it:
1) A 2-year requirement for college players in the new CBA. This is an idea that reportedly has been discussed, and it would take out Davis, Gilchrist, Miller, McAdoo, and all the other freshmen from the draft.
2) Freshmen returning for a 2nd season. We've seen it this year with Sullinger, Barnes, and the two Jones's. Most will blame it on the lockout. But could it actually be that they wanted to avoid the one-and-done status? Barnes and Sullinger especially are very competitive, so losing obviously hurt. However, only one of them can win the NCAA championship. I think at least some of these players will opt to return for a sophomore season, especially given the immense amount of talent already in the 2012 draft.

Gilchrist worries me a little that hes shane battier, i'll reserve judgment until ive seen him a bit more but its a feeling i get. I think rivers will need to show much improved shot selection at duke and if he can then he will be in consideration for the top 4 picks.

As for drummond and the 2013 lotto, i would hope the cavs have the next two lottos in the rebuilding plan, i worry we get too good too quickly and miss out on the chance to pick up enough talent, but you never know. Whoever gets drummond will be the equivalent of getting shaq or duncan, complete franchise player

If all of the lottery projected incoming freshman actually enter the 2012 draft I think we need to make whatever moves possible to get another high lottery pick. Everyone except Irving and TT should be expendable. We could realistically add two all star type players next year. Best case is we go into the 2012 season with four out of our five starters of the future and just need to find a starting center and add depth. It will be very exciting to watch a team of young guys grow together and get better every year, something we never got to experience in the Lebron era.

If the Cavs land one of the wings in next year's draft (Barnes, Miller, etc.), AND land Drummond... DAMN. That's the best young core in the league. I will say that right now with no hesitation.

Andre Drummond at a recent All-American camp. It's not even fair, I guarantee you his team won every game.
