2012 NFL Draft Rumor Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I guess we're going to have to just disagree here, I understand not wanting him because of his age or his injury, but that's not a reason to randomly trash his skill set.

Either you're randomly overrating Colt or severely under rating Weeden. I don't claim to be an expert, but I did watch a lot of his games because I thought there was a shot we'd target Blackmon. His arm strength is so far superior to Colt's it's stupid. He doesn't have a cannon, but compared to Colt's noodle he's got a rocket. He doesn't throw bombs, but the way he fits the ball into tight windows is so much better than Colt's. The receivers don't have to sit down and have a cup of tea while waiting for the ball to get there. He's also pretty darn accurate. I'm not going to post his completion percentage because he did throw a lot of dump offs, but his accuracy impressed me when I watched him. Better than anything Colt has shown in the pros.

Not even a little. Unless we pick Tannehil or Weeden then you're giving up our only real shot at getting a franchise QB next season just to draft a WR. If you want one that much, get Floyd or Marshall, not worth moving next years first to try and get Blackmon.

Weeden did a nice job of maintaining a simplified offense which doesn't necessitate him making many reads or making tough throws.

His arm is mediocre at BEST, and not going to get any better. With concerns about an injury.

Weeden is NOT the answer. This is a pretty damning bit from his scouting report via ESPN Insider:

"Most concerning is that Weeden struggles with his accuracy when throwing under pressure, which he will be forced to do far more frequently in the NFL. In four games charted in 2011, he completed just 45 percent of his throws when under pressure with a two TDs and 3 INTs."

Well, he'll be facing a lot more pressure in the NFL than he did in the defensively weak Big 12. No thanks.

The Tannehill intrerest screams "smokescreen" to me. It goes completely against the draft tendencies of Holmgren and Heckert. Their tendencies in the first round are to minimize risk and take the safe pick. Here are the players Heckert has taken in the first round:

Brodrick Bunkley (14th overall) - DT
Jeremy Maclin (19) - WR
Joe Haden (7) - CB
Phil Taylor (21) - DT

Mike Holmgren has never taken a QB in the first round. Part of that is because he's always had good QBs, but it is also important to note that he did not get those good QBs with high first-round picks.

Additionally, it is assumed by most that Tannehill will require at least two years on the bench before he can start. While their jobs are not in danger at the moment, I could see them being on the hot seat early in 2013 if we don't improve in 2012. They can't wait for Tannehill.

I believe it is our goal to draw Miami up to the No. 4 spot so they can take him. We'd much rather take Richardson at No. 8 and pick up extra picks in the process.

I can't disagree with the Tannehill thing. This is the perfect time to bring him in as a decoy. I guarantee we hear only positives coming out. That doesn't stop me from being nervous going into the draft. Can they really keep a smokescreen like that contained for a week and a half before the draft? If it happens like that, I'd be impressed and I'm a supporter of H&H already.

I don't see a way that Richardson makes it to 8, personally. I think that the Rams or Bucs would take him. Or I think someone would move up to get him. 8 is a pretty bad spot unless you like Blackmon AND Floyd.

^^^No way Richardson falls to #8. You probably either take him at #4 or don't get him, unless you only move down to #6 a real good understanding of what teams #4 (obviously) and #5 are gonna do.

i think it's a long shot but Schefter is speculating lately that the Vikings could pass on Kalil (doesn't make much sense to me then again Schefter is pretty reliable).

would certainly be an interesting scenario (if it happens) .....is Richardson good enough to pass on some very good trade offers we would likely get for that #4 pick then? right now i'm leaning towards trading down if that happens (and i love TRich) but if a team offers me a 1st+2nd+3rd this year (and a 2nd next year) i would pass on him...

thoughts? and what would i take for you guys to consider moving down (in the top 10 or even the teens)?

Good God, I'd trade down with up to the Dolphins if it meant getting a a decent return. I would trade down with the Rams for less because we know 1 of the guys we want will still be there. The Bucs are the wildcard. I feel we could trade down and still get Richardson if the Bucs are high on someone else. Rams certainly don't need a running back. Neither do the Jags or Panthers. As long as the Bucs don't pick him, I could see him dropping to 12.

I wouldn't count out the Jets moving up for Richardson. Tell me he doesn't scream something Rex Ryan is dying for.

I'm not a draft expert. I rely on others to do the work for me. From what I've read and listened to, there is nothing that suggest Weeden's arm is mediocre. So I'm not sure where you are getting that.

Overview

Strengths
Weeden has an NFL-quality frame that allows him to look over the offensive line and deliver his throws without a hitch. His quick release is his strongest asset, as he consistently fires the ball with a compact throwing motion and strong delivery. The ball zips off his arm, and he has the ability to fit it in any tight space. He is "all of the above" in terms of being a mature, poised leader. He is an accurate passer on throws short and long, and he has that gunslinger mentality to go for the deep ball when it's an option. He understands route progressions and throwing the ball to allow his receiver to make a play.

"Baseball background is noticeable with release. Has tendency to pat the ball before delivery and the release point is typically closer to three-quarters than over-the-top. Low release point brings up concerns about batted balls (had eight batted down, including one for INT, in four games charted in 2011). However, he has a quick delivery and the ball explodes off of his hand. Throws a tight spiral far more often than not. His overall arm strength is just a notch below elite."

Sticks throws into tight windows over the middle, throwing to spot on slant or between zone defenders before receiver is open. Baseball pitcher background translates to NFL arm strength. Sprays the ball anywhere on the field, especially when given a pocket from which to deliver.

Best case dolphins trade up for Tannelhill and we trade Khalil to the rams for there 1st and both 2nds. Then we'd have either Richardson or Claiborne at 6. Probably has less than 1% chance of happening but the smokescreens can give us some false hope.

This pisses me off. You always ridiculed me for ripping on the offense RGIII played in. :chuckles:

Though I completely agree with you about Weeden, let's get that straight.

no McCoys arm is mediocre at best, you can't sit here and debate that Weeden doesn't have a better arm then McCoy.

He has marginally better arm strength than McCoy. And I'm not convinced that in three years McCoy won't have improved his arm strength to a similar level.

Also, Weeden just crumbles under pressure...something he's never dealt with much at OSU.

Lastly, the scouting reports are so quick to mention his baseball background yet leave out that his baseball career ended due to arm injury.

Triple threat, the Oklahoma State offense and Baylors offense aren't that similar, aside from being shotgun based.

Matt Kalil is visiting with the Buccaneers according to Walterfootball. Just in case Minnesota doesnt take him or trade down

Everyone is visiting with everyone else. Heck we had a visit with Kalil. The interesting thing is we heard about the visits of Richardson/Weeden and Blackmon and Claiborne but nothing of Tannehill's visit. If you are truely interested in Tannehill would you leak his visit to the media?

Tannehill visits Monday/Tuesday next week

If the jets offer 2 firsts and 2 seconds I'm doing it without blinking. 2 firsts and a second I'm doin it without breaking a sweat. Anything less and I have to seriously think about it and probably wouldn't pull the trigger. Chances are 2 firsts would do it too.
