2012 RFA's

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Check the date that I originally posted that idea...it was before McGee was traded. I still wonder what price Denver would not match, but I'm willing to try. McGee is a big athletic guy that could provide exactly what Coach Scott wants out of his center (defense and rebounding). Feed him a couple lobs and easy bucked on offense, and he could easily be a 15point/12rebound/2block center.

As far his Hibbert and Lopez go, neither are ideal options. Neither are very good options. Hibbert is unathletic (despite someone claiming he is). He's not a good pick-and-roll center on offense or defense. Kyrie Irving is an EXCELLENT pnr point guard. He's a lumbering center, similar to how Z was the last few years. He's decently skilled, but not a good fit for this team. Lopez, also, is a horrible pnr center offensively and defensively. Yes, he's a good offensive center, but he doesn't fit what this team needs. Again, Byron Scott has said the center he needs is a defender and rebounder. Those are two of Lopez's biggest weaknesses. If you could combine Lopez's offense with Hibbert's rebounding and defense, then you'll have a good center. Without that, they're just not good fits. And think about it this way, IF those guys are that good, their current teams will not let them go (which they won't anyway), so a maximum contract would have to be offered (which is 'less than max' to the current team). Those guys are tainted forbidden fruit.

While your analysis on playstyles is spot on, McGee is the dumbest player in the NBA. I've made the comparison before of a completely exaggerated Ryan Hollins. Take all of Hollins' attributes - namely his awesome athleticism and equally terrible brain - and just imagine those magnified tenfold.

I don't expect the Cavs to hit free agency very hard this summer, and certainly not go poaching for RFA's.

1) The Cavs will need open roster spots if they draft 4 players this June.
2) There are a number of teams with cap space that have to spend to get to get up to minimum team salary, so don't expect many bargains this summer.
3) The Cavs won't have to worry about minimum salary because they will still be paying more than $10 Mil to Baron Davis next year.
4) The Cavs have their own RFA to think about, Alonzo Gee. Semih Erden, Luke Harangody, and possibly Donald Sloan & Manny Harris will also be RFA's. If the Cavs go poaching other RFA's, they are asking for trouble keeping Gee.
5) Signing an expensive free agent would almost certainly take away from rookie player development. Who wants to spend $15 Mil to take minutes away from the rookies?
6) In 2013, the Cavs will still have cap space, fewer other teams will have cap space, the Cavs will have a better idea what kind of free agents they need to add to their core to be contenders, and they will need to spend money to get up to NBA minimum salary.

So don't go getting to excited about the 2012 RFA class. In my mind, the Cavs are almost certain to sit out free agency this year and wait until 2013 to start spending unless a great value falls into their lap.

I don't disagree with what you're saying. His actions on, and off, the court would certainly seem to prove what you're saying. It's purely a hunch, or a gut feeling, but I think the knuckleheadedness McGee has exhibited thus far in his career is due to the lack of coaching, and mentoring, in his career so far. Think about it. Think about the coaches he's had so far. Think about the organizations he played in so far. Think about the instability and culture he's been a part of since he came into the NBA. He's immature, and his experiences so far, have added to that, I think. I truly believe that the proper coach and organizational culture could do wonders for that kid. I think his value was at the lowest just now, and acquiring him could've been pretty easy (and cheap) had he stayed with the Wizards. I think Coach Karl will help McGee a bit, with his history of "headcases," but I still think he could use a better atmosphere. Perhaps the Cavaliers could provide that.

Spot on. I'll add that signing one of those guys to a max or close to max contact would give me a summer of hughes vibe. None of those guys blow me away, and I could see any of them failing to fit in or have an impact justifying the price.

I'm one of those stupid "you don't have to build solely through high lottery picks" guys, but this team is not yet ripe for making any significant FA signings yet. Stay the course for now. Use all those available minutes to both develop our young core pieces already in place, and, more importantly, to stage a proving ground for the late first/second rounders and even undrafted FA types to see if we can uncover another Gee. Now, not they won't necessarily become long term core pieces, but a guy picked late or even just signed after not being drafted can become a a lot more valuable than the price of original acquisition if he becomes a wilson chandler, gee, courtney lee (in orl), blair, wesley matthews, etc...

So we retain flexibility, develop our young core, and polish up some gems at low entry prices. We can then sell high to make smart acqisitions via trade, where we don't have to overpay because of our market, and either use the cap flexibility to absorb contacts and get more picks, or to re-up guys that have already shown that they fit in to what we're trying to do. Then, if and when we establish a real winning culture, and only then, we can maybe bring in a player or two in FA without overpaying if said players care about winning and being a part of a young, hard-nosed and up-and-coming squad, which are the only type of players I'd want us to sign anyways.

no free agency this year please...just wait patiently to when the Cavs need the last piece to push them over the top...PATIENCE....ps-Harden is the only guy I give the max too

Were not drafting every single piece. We're gonna have to get at least one starter from trade or FA

I don't see how anyone could want Magee especially for 8 mil. Wtf. I'm glad you guys don't run shit

Being a top 10 center in today's league ain't crap. ANDY is in that conversation

Why would u want to resign Harangody and Erden? I wish we could get a second rounder for both of them like we gave boston.

JaVale was asking for $14m/year from the Wizards. He just doesn't get it, and probably never will. You can't lay this on anything but a disconnect in his head.

He puts up 23 & 18 with 5 blocks in a single game, and he thinks he's that player ... not the guy with the team worst -13 net +/-.

Seriously? I bet they laughed in his face. Thats something a good agent would filter. His agent must be his mom or something
