2013 NBA Preseason Game 1 -|- Bucks @ Cavs -|- October 8th, 7:00PM.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Kadji looked good. I guess the worry with him was that he was old. I figured he would look soft, but he was really physical. Nice skill set, 7 feet tall, and tough? He is going to stick. Doesn't matter that he is 25, he looked like an NBA player out there. He has poise.

I'm really impressed by the intelligence on this team. It's going to be hard to determine upside for some of these guys

I found a gem of a post on the Bucks' game thread for tonight's game against us on their RealGM discussion board, and I think it pretty much sums up their fans' thoughts on the season:

Please suck this bad when it matters.

:chuckles:

The game feed on FOX SUCKED..it was like a internet stream that broke.

promising 1st preseason game for the cavs, hoping for consistent defensive effort and good ball movement for the rest of the 2013-2014 season.. this might be a very good year for the cavs!

I really enjoyed watching this game and seeing the team cohesion. Kyrie, Dion, TT and Andy are all 100% committed and it shows in their body language and their continual effort. A number of times Kyrie and Dion were committing to multiple close out and rotations.

I only counted 2 bad shots by Dion

Delly looked better than in the summer league, as did Kadji

Felix will go down to the D league to grow his offensive game, but his defense is crazy good for a rookie.

Karasev just seems to see a play unfold, there was a great moment where he found bennett knowing he had the angle to feed kadji for the score. Once he gets an extra layer of experience i think he can contribute this season in spots.

Bennett is just showing the signs of rust, he's jumping more on his jumper and its causing him to fall a bit. I was impressed that he mainly managed to help and recover to the right spots, but was a bit lacking in the boxing out. he is great at taking contact and i have confidence he will round into shape for november.

Earl Clark needs to look for his shot more next game, too much trying to be a nice guy and second guessing his shots. He defended great though.

CJ showed that hes not afraid to be a gunner off the bench, he moved off screens well and Jack will get him the ball at the right time.

Overall i liked most of the offense the cavs ran, although i worry the wing to baseline p+r will be risky against a decent defense.

As far as the Bucks: knight will make the most of the change of scenery, and while he never will become an elite PG, he will be a great defender.

Giannis look 100times better than i expected, give him a few years and he might develop into something special, he reminded me of jonathan bender a little.

Here's a nice write-up after the game:

Cavs 99, Bucks 87: final thoughts
By JASON LLOYD Published: October 9, 2013

* When Mike Brown was here the first time, his pregame and postgame press conferences were held in the hallway outside the Cavs’ locker room. Now they’re more formal, down the hall inside the Q and on a podium. Brown laughed when a worker clipped the microphone to his sweater vest pregame. “I used to just stand in front of the curtain,” he joked. “That was more my speed.”

* Indeed, plenty has changed around here since the last time Mike Brown coached the Cavaliers. It was a little surreal looking down the bench and seeing Brown on the sidelines and he conceded prior to the game he felt the same way. I get the feeling it won’t take long for him to fall back in his rhythm.

* Jarrett Jack’s locker is right in between Dion Waiters and Kyrie Irving at both the arena and practice facility. That’s not a coincidence. It only makes sense for Jack to immerse himself with the two young guards since the three of them will be playing so much together, but it’s also so Jack can keep one eye on each of the youngsters.

* Rookie Carrick Felix is older than Irving, Waiters and Tristan Thompson. And Felix is also turning some heads with a strong camp. It could be tricky finding him minutes, but if he defends as well as his reputation, Brown will find ways to get him on the floor.

* I initially thought DeSagana Diop would have an inside track on one of the final roster spots, but Brown didn’t insert him until late in the fourth quarter Tuesday and it was easy to see why. He labored getting up and down the floor. Now I’m skeptical if Diop has a shot at making it.

* Kenny Kadji didn’t play until the second half, but he had 15 points and five rebounds. He got up a Waiters-like 11 shots in 12 ½ minutes.

* Anthony Bennett has struggled mightily in both the Wine & Gold game and Tuesday’s preseason opener. He looks … rattled. He missed all three of his 3-pointers Saturday and badly clanked his first attempt Tuesday off the side of the backboard. Then after he was woefully short on a free throw attempt, C.J. Miles stepped into the lane and tried calming him down. Bennett finished with seven points and an impressive 10 rebounds in 23 minutes, but he shot just 2 of 12 and struggled defensively. Brown made it clear Bennett’s defensive lapses were a big reason why he had to cut through so many timeouts.

* It has been reiterated to me on multiple occasions that this is all new to Bennett. He did very little at UNLV in the way of conditioning and defense. He might be a little overloaded right now, but the raw talent is evident both in the 10 rebounds he grabbed Tuesday and his flat-footed monster dunk over Tristan Thompson on Saturday. “I don’t expect anything from him but give me effort every play,” Brown said of Bennett. “Whatever he does on top of that is gravy. He’s a talented kid with great athleticism. I’d say his skill set is off the charts.”

* Earl Clark was a bit of a disappointment, fouling out in under 17 minutes. I think he’ll be fine and should serve as a good wing defender, but he had more turnovers (two) than baskets (one) in his debut.

* The Cavs had a ridiculous 26 turnovers offensively, but Brown didn't seem overly concerned. He expected a somewhat sloppy offensive effort because of how little time the team has spent on the offensive end. But he was also pleased to see the ball "humming" at times.

* NBA analyst Chris Webber called the Cavs “the best young talented team in the league” on a conference call Tuesday morning. Fellow analyst Greg Anthony and Webber both agreed this will be a huge season in terms of the Cavs’ development if they are to take the next step from a young team with potential to a legitimate team to fear. “Jarrett Jack was one of best pickups by anybody in the NBA this past offseason,” Anthony said. “He’s the perfect player to compliment what Waiters and Kyrie are able to do.”

* As Irving was ready to start his pregame media availability Tuesday, Jack interrupted because Irving’s mesh bag had trickled over into his personal space. “Could you keep your damn net bag in your locker please?” Jack joked. Irving grabbed it and tossed it in his locker. “Can’t you see I’m doing an interview?” he said. The moment was light-hearted and playful, but it also delivered a subtle message: Jack is going to stay on Irving about the big stuff and the little things. Like the net bags.

Stats
Tristan Thompson 17pts, 8rebs, 3asts
Kyrie Irving 14pts, 3asts, 5 turnovers
Dion Waiters 12pts, 4/11 FGs
Kenny Kadji 15pts, 5rebs
C.J. Miles 12pts, 2/4 on 3-pointers

Quotable
"That’s our defensive staple. ... It’s pretty simple. You don’t do it, you don't play." -- Tristan Thompson on his renewed effort to defending the pick-and-roll and defense in general

Up next
The Cavs (1-0) travel to face the Orlando Magic on Friday.

I agree about Diop. By the time he gets back in shape, it may be too late for him to grab one of the final roster spots.

And I'm fine with that.

The only reason to keep a guy with Diop's age and talent level around would be for the veteran, experienced presence. However, the truth is that he doesn't provide either of those things...he's just a bad NBA player with very few redeeming qualities.

It's nice to have another big body though, so I see why they brought him in for a flyer. So if you want that big body, give Kadji the roster spot. Provides much more than Diop. Jack and Varejao are more than enough of a veteran presence.

I see you spelled Tristan Thompson's name wrong. :chuckles:

Have a feeling I am going to appreciate Tristan MUCH MORE in a defensive system where his guard like quickness is used schematically. In Scotts system, they called for him to be bigger and stouter. Zeller is pretty quick on his feet as well so he should pull off those "shows" and be able to recover like Mike Brown calls for well too, so Im not selling him up the river. Just would like to keep Kadji somehow on the 15 as well.

I dont care that he is 25. He has more talent and composure than big guys who were in playoff rotations last year. He'd definitely be an upgrade over the roster fillers that Brown used to have like Dwayne Jones and Lorenzen Wright (at that stage in his career, RIP). Cant have enough bigs who can contribute.

I went to the Q last night (it was pretty empty in there, they gave us a free ticket upgrade-so that was nice). I like watching the off the ball action a lot in person.

A few of my opinions:

* The defense was 10x more effort than anything I saw last year.
* I think CJ Miles is our starting SF. As long as he is a bit more selective in his shots he may be the perfect fit there as he can knock down that open three ball. He is also a decent defender when he is giving effort and he was def. giving effort last night. Which I think is going to be a common theme with everyone--as this year if you are not, there is def. talent behind you that will and you just may lose your spot.
* Kadji seems to be a keeper. I also like him better than Zellers. But it is just one pre-season game--but he was battling with a significantly bigger guy and not doing too bad. Zellers would have been just run over. He was quick for a guy his size.
* Giannis from the Bucks was impressive. He had a one legged step back on one shot, handled it well and his jump shot looked very good. He is very tall--he didn't seem much shorter than Andy even.
* Andy looked great--and for everyone that has said he should just be a PF--well he was significantly bigger than Larry Sanders last night-width and weight. And for all of Larry Sanders shot blocking ability it seemed to hurt the Bucks at times--as every time he came and made a block it left our bigs open for a rebound put back.
* Karasev just knows how to play basketball. And his release is so fast on his shot. He is going to be a great pick for where we got him in my opinion.
* I really thought AB would be more explosive, but lets give him some time to get his feet under him.

Overall, pretty good showing. I think we are going to be much better than the national forecasts. Vegas has our over under and 40.5 wins--I would def. bet the over.

And I would bet the over assuming zero games from Bynum. If he plays and plays well---well we could be a very dangerous team come the post season. (speaking of Bynum, I was at Crocker Park last week with the wife at the movies--and lo and behold a giant 7 footer came riding up on a bicycle. Parked it and walked in, got a popcorn and water and went and watched a movie by himself. One thing about it is sometimes you just don't realize how big these guys really are--I am 6'1" and felt like a midget standing a few feet from him. Two, he looked way slimmer than at any time I have seen him play in the past. And yes, I did find it odd that a 26 year old multi millionaire was at the movies by himself on a Sat night--but hey that is way better than him being out at the clubs partying when he is trying to get ready for the season!)

I'm a thousandaire and do that ish all the time.

Loved what I saw from our team last night. We'll be both competitive and fun to watch. The bandwagonnners have already begun to take notice.

anywhere i can watch this game? are they going to be posting them on the cavs website?
