2014-15 Off-Season Thread (Moss Acquired - Page 16)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Cuban defector Yoan Moncada has a showcase for scouts November 12 in Guatemala.

He's 19, 6-2 205 and plays 3B and SS. He's described as the next Jorge Soler. He's gonna get PAID.

He'll be subjected to MLB's Bonus Pool guidelines. It gets interesting because the Cubs and Rangers can't sign him due to exceeding their bonus pools in 2013-2014. The Yankees, Red Sox and Rays would have a 100% tax on what ever they sign him for because they've exceeded their bonus pool's during the 2014-2015 period.

I'd love to see the Indians get in on this one though we all know it's a pipe dream.

Moncada's freakish, saw him in Mexico in 2010 and was certain that he wasn't his listed age.

Probably the highest ceiling of all the Cubans.

I'd be OK with the MLBTradeRumors predictions if they had the Indians landing at least one guy with a decent impact. The Tigers losing Martinez/Scherzer/Hunter and only adding Miller plus the Royals adding Burnett and losing Shields/Butler/Aoki would be fantastic.

If the Tribe still has their pool, though, doesn't that mean they are still in play? Or is it still a matter where the signing team is just blowing up their signing pool for two years to get him, regardless of how much they pay him?

Honestly the whole "bonus pool" thing is just an obstacle.

Some team over their limit can simply offer him a retarded number if he holds out until after July 2 this season and everyone is in play.

Wish list for this off season, can't go wrong with any of these guys, if the Indians are willing to spend....

1.) Max Scherzer
2.) James Shields
3.) Victor Martinez
4.) Billy Butler

Billy Butler wouldn't be that unreasonable if he doesn't pose the same issue signing Martinez would as a DH-only player. But yeah, none of those guys are coming here lol.

Ben Reiter of Sports Illustrated has the Indians signing Edinson Volquez and Alex Rios.

His extended comments:

Edinson Volquez

2014 Stats: 13-7, 3.04 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 6.5 K/9
Volquez was this year's version of Francisco Liriano, a pitcher with good stuff who was able to put it together with the help of Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage, who is one of the league's best. Volquez's ERA dropped by more than a run, to a career low 3.04, and he did it by learning to pitch to contact: His strikeout rate declined by nearly two batters per nine, but mechanical changes suggested by Searage helped him improve his walk rate to a career low 3.3 per game. His new team will hope that he can bring those beneficial adjustments with him; the Indians are among several who could use one more mid-rotation arm.

Alex Rios

2014 Stats: .280 BA, .709 OPS, 4 HR, 54 RBI, 17 SB
The Rangers' virulent injury bug did not spare Rios, as he was hampered by a mid-July sprained ankle that lingered until an infected thumb ended his season in early September. The Rangers declined to pick up his $14 million option, in part because of a precipitous dropoff in his power and speed numbers (he hit 18 home runs with 42 steals in 2013). But Rios seemed to be on track for a season of nearly his usual standards before that ankle tweak (he hit all of his home runs and stole all but one of his bases before the All-Star break, when he was hitting .305). A healthy Rios would represent an upgrade in rightfield for the Indians, a position from which they got 10 homers and a .636 OPS in 2014.

Internet rumor floating around about a Bourn for Edwin Jackson swap.

Actually a random question, does anyone know when tickets for the All Star game in Cinci go on sale?

Not until closer to the season. Season Ticket holders get first dibs. Some secondary market websites have them but they are pretty pricey (as expected).
