2014 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Jose Ramirez is 10x a better prospect than Walters and playing well at the MLB level. Walters was never acquired to play short, more of a super utility guy.

Uh, Jose's likely projection in the bigs is in the same role, too. About equal, really, both have their positives and warts. Walters has a good deal of power but doesn't walk much, Ramirez has no power but has good ABs and runs the bases well with the speed to get better. I think the club is eying Walters and his power for an OF spot and then hopefully have a more defensive-oriented guy for the regular infield gigs. The guy to keep an eye on is Geovanny Urshela at Columbus. Plus defender, 22 years old with a 26/43 BB/K ratio in 85 games for the Clippers. Has some pop in his bat that has been slowly growing as he moved up the organizational ladder. Guy that has just quietly gotten better and gotten it done. Reminds me of another guy already on the team who is like that who is also pretty clutch and has dreamy eyes. Hopefully Urshela gets some burn up here at roster expansion time.

Huh?

Jose projects as an everyday SS with + defense-- can't lose sight of that. It's unfortunate for him that we have Lindor on the way but that's what's necessitated his positional flexibility. Might be trade bait for a pitcher, but I know Tito loves him-- maybe they continue to develop him in CF.

Urshela is okay. Solid but kinda out performed with the bat based on his hit tool this year, IMO. Probably won't get the call this September-- he's not on the 40 and hasn't spent a ton of time in AAA.

No, Ramirez doesn't. He is an OK defensive SS and was moved to 2B as much for that as the presence of Lindor. And the general consensus is that due to his lack of power he is in all probability a utlity guy. I have been on this guy's bandwagon since 2012, but his profiel right now is not as a bigleague regular. He has work to do.

As for Urshela, 22 year olds do not 'outperform' the bat- that is called development. He has more time at AAA than Ramirez. He has been young for his level every single year he has been in the minors. He is also outstanding defensively at 3B. Our current 3B is one of the worst defensive 3B in baseball, and he has been trending back towards his career #s since before the break. Tribe is going to take a look at him, if not this year for some reason then definitely in spring training.

You need to understand the Indians haven't moved Ramirez around the diamond because he can't defend at short- you're crazy to say that, btw, he's easily the 2nd best infield defender in the organization. It was to get his speed and defense onto the big league roster ASAP last year down the stretch. He's playing well as an everyday SS as a 21 year old in the MLB right now and getting better everyday. Yes, the original plan was for him to be a utility guy for a year or two so the big club can utilize his speed off the bench and allow his bat to catch up, and that might still be the plan, but he's always profiled as an everyday middle infielder- have you seen the sorry excuses some teams are trotting out there at SS or 2B? I can promise you that Jose wouldn't be up here right now if the Indians didn't think he's an everyday player. MLB teams don't call up 21 year olds in hopes they turn into a utility player.....

Eh, again Urshela is ok-- he's not the caliber of prospect of Ramirez so he's gonna need to prove more at AAA-- 85 games isn't a whole lot for a non fast-track prospect. Don't get me wrong, he's playing well this year and he looks to be developing nicely, but his path to the bigs will be longer. He needs to have a longer track record of success with his approach at the plate. He's made a big adjustment to his swing by adding a high leg kick and looks like he lowered his hands in his load but he needs to duplicate this success again next year to knock on the MLB door next year.

That's about the high side of his ceiling, and that's being really kind about it.

He's played less than 100 minor league games at shortstop in his career thus far. Let's slow down on anointing his plus defense, as well.

Ah, a Huntington Park 360 ft gap HR. Might even be shorter in that spot. At least it would hve been a sac fly in every bigleague park but Boston. Gorgeous ballpark with dimensions that make it hard to gauge prospect power #s...

James Ramsey is 4-4 with a HR, 2B, and 4 RBI tonight. Is now hitting .300 at AAA after a slow start.

edit: 5-5, HR, 2 2B, and 4 RBI.

Justin Masterson's line from yesterday: 7 IP, 3 hits, no runs, no walks, 3 Ks. At least the guy we got can hit AAA pitching.

Let's just completely ignore the 5.58 era, the velocity drop, and the looming free agency...

Take this shit out of the minor league thread.

....he's a top-5 prospect in our system, not some throwaway prospect.

I knew Masterson would eventually have a good game and someone would come in here and start with that stuff. :chuckles:

Going to the Columbus @ Toledo game tonight... excited to check out Lindor in person, and to a lesser extent Ramsey, Aguilar, and Bourne on his rehab assignment.

I thought Bourn was getting activated today
