2015 RCF NFL Mock Draft Rounds 1 and 2 - Patriots

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
With the 50th pick in the RCF Mock Draft the Buffalo Bills select

Paul Dawson, LB, TCU

OKLAHOMA_ST_TCU_FOOTBALL_40353029.jpg

Buffalo has little depth at linebacker behind Nigel Bradham and Preston Brown with the departures of Kiki Alonso, Keith Rivers, and Brandon Spikes this offseason.

Dawson is an instinctual three down linebacker that excels in coverage and stopping the run; he allowed only 35.7% of passes thrown at him to be completed while also leading the nation in stopping percentage. His overall production at TCU was incredible last season: 136 total tackles (81 solo), 20 TFLs, 6 sacks, 4 INTs.

There's been some character concerns with Dawson, but he wrote a great draft diary with USA Today to address those concerns. Going to a demanding defensive coach in Rex Ryan could help Dawson turn into a Pro Bowl caliber defender.

Ummmm.... I really want this guy on the browns now.

Ummmm.... I really want this guy on the browns now.

He might fall in the draft, he bombed his combine workouts and his Pro Day wasn't a huge improvement. He's just a monster on the field though; he might edge out Kendricks as the most complete linebacker available. Here's a great article from PFF that highlights how impressive Dawson was as a run-stuffing, pass rush machine last year.

Not that I don't think I've gotten good talent so far for the Chiefs in this draft, I just hope they can actually fill some holes better than I have done. I hope they come away with a top ILB, one of the better receivers, and hopefully a solid CB or two. And a solid OL. A lot to ask for but it's doable. If I could have traded my pick down, I probably would have succeeded and got everything I wanted but oh well.

My apologies for the delay.. Had an unexpected business trip for work the end of the week and haven't had much free time to check the site. With that said...

With the 51st pick in the RCF Mock Draft, the Houston Texans select Michael Bennett, DT, THE Ohio State University

Michael-Bennett.jpg

STRENGTHS: Displays outstanding balance and coordination through contact to work off blocks and keep his feet to be a factor in plays. He "wins" with quickness out of his stance and uses his leverage, leg drive and strong grip to latch-and-rip past blockers and penetrate the backfield.

Uses his high motor and backfield vision to put himself in position to make a play, allowing his controlled footwork and smooth hips to do the rest. Bennett has improved backfield vision with the controlled footwork and change of direction skills that is uncommon for the position, allowing him to play up and down the line of scrimmage.

WEAKNESSES: Isn't a people mover and lacks overwhelming strength to bully, struggling to shock blockers with his hands at the point of attack. Intensity appears to waver from snap-to-snap and he tends to give up too easily if his initial move doesn't work at the point of attack.

Bennett is a balanced athlete with excellent quickness and body control, but scouts want to see him split double teams and handle the extra attention, showing consistent effort for all four quarters.

Reasons for the pick: the Texans can plug him all over the line, and early on especially as 3rd down lineman in passing situations. With the run on defensive linemen early in the 1st we turned our attention to adding an offensive weapon in Jaelen Strong. So, in the 2nd it was all about adding depth to either the d line or secondary. Bennett was our guy.

  • BENCH PRESS: 30 REPS
  • VERTICAL JUMP: 30.5 INCH

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/profiles/ali-marpet?id=2552332

Strengths

Good foot quickness with ability to reach and hook opponents. Quick out of stance and into defender. Usually the low man, using hips and arm extension to lock out and control his man. Has leg drive to drive his man backward and finish. Consistent with hand placement in run and pass. Plays with advanced technique for a Division III player. More than held his own at the Senior Bowl against both quickness and strength. Moved from tackle to guard with no issues during the week of practice. Outstanding NFL Scouting Combine with impressive showing on bench press (30 reps).

Weaknesses

Played against inferior athletic competition and wasn't challenged enough. Gets caught leaning and lunging. Lets inferior athletes get to his edge. Average with redirect. Has short legs. Needs to add more thickness through entire body.

NFL Comparison

Eric Kush

Bottom Line

Has the body type and movement of a zone-scheme center with guard potential. Technically sound and has athleticism to become an NFL starter, but must prove he can handle the substantial jump in power and speed he will see. Looked strong enough at the Senior Bowl, but he could be a year away from being ready. Ascending prospect with a chance to be one of the steals from this year's group of interior blockers.

Reason for Pick

With an aging O-line and rumors that the Eagles may be shopping LG Evan Mathis, Marpet becomes a versatile player in a Chip Kelly run scheme. Ali is viewed as a guy that could potentially play any position on the O-line. He posted outstanding numbers at the combine. Marpet was the first D-III athlete to attend the Senior Bowl in over 20 years and would be the first D-III player to be selected in the first 100 picks since 1990. He may be available in the 3rd or 4th round but with the Eagles trading their 3rd rounder to get WR Breshad Perriman (after OT Jake fisher was off the board) they couldn't take a chance on losing out on a guy they coveted.

Other Players Considered:

(OG) A.J. Cann

With the 53rd pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select Hau'Oli Kikaha, OLB, University of Washington.

1419705.jpg

Hau'oli Kikaha (OLB)
HT: 6'2" WT: 253LBS.

POSITION: OLB

SCHOOL: Washington

ARM LENGTH: 32 1/2"

HANDS: 9 5/8"

Overview
Changed last name from Jamora to Kikaha -- which is his mother's last name -- prior to 2013 season. Completed dominant two-year run that saw him earn first-team All-American and first-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2014 and second-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2013. Combined for 32 sacks, 40 tackles for loss and six forced fumbles during that stretch, starting all 27 games played. Finished 2014 with 19 sacks, including at least one in 13 of 14 games. Started first four games as freshman in 2011, but missed final nine after tearing ACL. Granted medical redshirt in 2012 after tearing ACL again in fall camp. In high school, member of team that finished as runner-up to state champion. Played defensive end and tight end. Also competed in judo and wrestling, winning league championship in judo.

Pro Day Results

40-yard dash: 4.9 seconds
Vertical jump: 34 1/2 inches
Broad jump: 9 feet, 4 inches
Short shuttle: 4.33 seconds
3-cone: 7.13 seconds
Bench: 20 reps of 225 pounds

ANALYSIS
Strengths
Relentless. Bends the edge hard. Plays with his hand on the ground and stands up. Scheme versatile. Best fit is in 3-4. Intelligent player. Saw a streak of 14 consecutive games with a sack broken at Arizona in 2014. Excellent with his hands, possessing a variety of techniques. Was a judo champion when he was younger and a high school wrestler, so he understands hand placement and leverage. Good change of direction. Maintains low center of gravity on his rush without losing his wheels. Ability to recover and get back into a play.

Weaknesses
Can get swallowed up in the run game at defensive end. Has had knee issues in prior seasons. Perceived as a one-trick pony (pass-rush specialist). Upfield specialist and doesn't set the edge consistently. Needs work on playing consistently in space. Gets overly aggressive at times. Has had two ACL injuries and medicals will need to be scrutinized.

NFL Comparison
Rob Ninkovich

Bottom Line
Kikaha is the most accomplished pure pass rusher in this draft class. Relies on a relentless motor off the edge more than athleticism. He has an elite determination to get to the quarterback. While he seems to specialize in just rushing the passer, Kikaha has the power, hands and frame to improve against the run. It might take some work to get fully comfortable as a stand-up 3-4 OLB, but Kikaha is a very safe draft prospect as long as his medicals check out.

@The Hill and the Detroit Lions are now on the clock.

With the 54th pick in the NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select David Johnson, RB, Northern Iowa.

51f7266d803b7.preview-620.jpg

Grade: 5.56

Overview
Played in 2015 Senior Bowl, gaining 43 yards rushing while adding a touchdown, a pass reception for 16 yards and 82 kick-return yards. Selected first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference in both 2013 and 2014 and became first player in school history with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. Selected third-team FCS All-American in 2014 while breaking 15 school records. In 2012, selected second-team All-MVFC and totaled more than 100 rushing yards in each of his final six games. Selected All-Newcomer MVFC and honorable mention All-MVFC in 2011. Redshirted in 2010.

Combine Stats
40 Yard Dash: 4.50 sec*
Bench Press: 25 reps*
Vertical Jump: 41.5 inch*
Broad Jump: 127.0 inch*
3 Cone Drill: 6.82 sec*
20 Yard Shuttle: 4.27 sec
* = Combine top performer

Analysis
Strengths
Looks good on the hoof. Possesses a big body and falls forward for additional yards. Smooth pass-catcher out of the backfield and is a mismatch for linebackers. Has been a consistent weapon out of the backfield while in college. Uses an effective jump cut on inside runs to change direction and can string a couple of them together on the same run. Has good long speed when he gets into space. Has enough pop behind his pads to become a better finisher.

Weaknesses

Long-strider. Doesn't always look like he has the foot quickness to burst through the hole consistently. Allows defenders to get a hand on him through the replace and isn't a classic finisher. Tends to hit the brakes too hard in order to make his cuts. Questionable vision. Looks to make cuts instead of keeping the run play-side. Scouts want to see more fire in his play demeanor. Play strength and blocking are problems. Goes down too easily.

Bottom Line
Johnson lacks the short-area quickness to be a consistently effective every-down running back, but he has good size, speed and hands, so he will be a factor. Johnson has been impressive this offseason, and if a team is looking for a rhythm runner with a good pace and hands to threaten out of the backfield, then he is the guy.

Reason for Pick
Reggie Bush is gone and Joique Bell will be 29 this season, so the Lions need some depth at running back. Enter David Johnson. Although he is from a small school, he has great size (6'1", 224 pounds) and athletic ability. An excellent receiver out of the backfield, he can initially fill the Lions' receiving/3rd down back role, and eventually take over the bulk of carries as Joique Bell ages.

The main question is whether his production at a small school will translate. His impressive showing at the Combine shows that he has the athletic ability to produce in the NFL. He's not ranked high on most mock draft sites, but I think we will eventually look back at Johnson and wonder why he wasn't in the same conversation with Gurley and Gordon.

Other Players Considered
Seriously would have considered Michael Bennett if he was available, but he went a few picks earlier. Also considered Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma.

@AZ_ and the Arizona Cardinals are on the clock.

With the 55th pick, the Arizona Cardinals select:

Denzel Perryman - MLB - The U

Denzel-Perryman.jpg

Analysis:

The middle of the Cardinals defense lacks the instinctive linebacker presence since Karlos Dansby left. Enter Perryman, an undersized but always around the ball type who makes plays all over the field.

Strengths:

Quick enough laterally to chase down the play and get in position for the tackle, while the low center of gravity allows him to take on offensive lineman and shed blocks.

Instincts are top level and can fill the void of playcaller on the defense. Similar to Borland last year, size concerns will push him down the board a bit, but put him on the field and football skills take over.

Weaknesses:

Size. That's pretty much it, under 6' and could add a bit more good weight to his frame. Will come with time.

I watched an episode of The Panel where they broke down Perryman. They loved him. He's always in the right place. Seems like a smart player.
