Or, Altman could've voted with Grant because he didn't believe Bennett was worthy of the #1 pick. As you said, it was his first draft, so perhaps he should've placed greater emphasis on getting the pick correct over groupthink appeasement. Whether he was trying to blend in, or simply enamored with Bennett's potential, a vote for Bennett still goes down as a vote for the biggest bust in NBA history.The problem I see in putting anything into Altman's vote is that he was so new in the organization and it was his first draft. Him going against all the guys in the room that he probably had been learning from would have looked bad and agreeing with Grant would have looked like he was sucking up.
