2020 Off-Season Rumors/News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I would imagine Giles and Treinen would only be deadline targets, should Toronto or Oakland be out of the hunt. Just because they're both UFAs and should have somewhat high salaries, for relievers at least.

There's been talk of Treinen being non-tendered.

he didn’t have the best of years, so we may take a flier on a guy like him to finish out the roster. I mean it cannot hurt to try if we don’t pay a lot for him

This is probably going to sound like a copout, but bullpen guys can be pretty damn unpredictable from year to year. So sure, we have to make plans based on the most reasonable projections of how guys will perform next year, and can make some predictions based on most likely scenarios.

But some guys on whom we rely might flop, and some other dudes may come out of essentially nowhere. The variance between what we predict for different guys today and who they will actually perform next year is so large that claims that "we can't compete next year unless we do "x" with the bullpen" should be taken with a massive grain of salt. And vice-versa.

Bullpen pitching is freaking voodoo on a year to year basis.

not going to disagree with you and a lot of the times I look at other stats outside of ERA for relievers. Everyone has a bad outing but if you have 3 perfect innings then give up a 3 Run HR the next outing and go like .1 of an inning, you have like a 5 ERA, but you may have only had one legit bad pitch.

I just personally feel we need one of those guys who has experience in high leverage situations who can help us when Hand struggles/need an off day. I think that would really help us.

Though I actually wouldn’t mind getting Joe Smith back in Cleveland especially with all the young arms that could be up in the bullpen. I think his experience could help guys like Cimber get through any tough stretches.

Treinen has had one really good season and has been average to above average for the rest of his career, outside of a horrendous 2019.

I'd pass unless he's dirt cheap.

Joe Smith would be a nice get, although I wonder if the organization would want to side-arm righties in their pen. Can't remember a team that has ever done that.

Per Hoynes, the owners are expected to approve the new rule which will require starting and relief pitchers to face at least three batters or pitch to the end of a half inning before being removed. That could have a significant impact on bullpen construction.

Might end Oliver Perez’s career

It could hurt a lot of lefty pitchers honestly around the league. I know what the league is trying to do, but this hurts a lot of left handed pitchers in my mind.

This is shittiest rule one could ever imagine. Baseball is a strategical sport. Changing pitchers when you want is strategy and impacts wins and losses. The team pitching isn't allowed to substitute a pitcher for strategic reasons, but the opposing team can pinch hit the batter to get an upper hand. I don't like this shit, not one bit. Fuck off to the people that want to speed the game up minimizing the most stoppages.

Respectfully disagree with you. The game and strategy for the game continues to evolve and change. In some ways this is like the introduction of the DH decades ago. Now there is only 1 league that still has pitchers batting on a regular basis.

The usage of closers really began in the 70s and that role continued to change. Lefty specialists really began in the 90s & has continued to change.

Now there are changes in the rules starting in 2020. The usage of bullpens will change from how we know it now but strategy will still exist and those new methods will continue to evolve...

I prefer this change to some other items out there (ie runner starting on 2nd base to begin each half inning once extra innings are reached)

Anything that ends a career for Oliver Perez can't be good for baseball.

Oliver Perez will al..will alwa.. will always...will always be one of my favorites.
