The Royals are 14-27 and have lost six in a row and 12 of 15. They lost two of three to the Indians last week and were outscored 16-3. They’re 29th in runs per game and 19th in team ERA. Salvador Perez, who leads the team in BA and slugging percentage, is still out. Even Whit Merrifield is struggling with a .248 average. Against all odds Indians pitchers held him hitless the last series.
The matchups:
Game 1 Plesac v. Brad Keller (3-1, 1.93). Keller is their best starter and has allowed 0 or 1 run in four of his five starts. He held the Tribe to one run in six innings last week in the Royals 2-1 win. Tonight’s game could be very similar if Plesac is on top of his game. Now that the Indians have faced him once maybe they will have a better approach this time.
Game 2 McKenzie v. Jakob Junis (0-1, 4.32). Junis has been a model of consistency in his four starts, going 3.2 to 4.2 innings and allowing two earned runs each time. The Indians got two runs in four innings against him Wednesday. His WHIP is somewhat high at 1.44 so hopefully they can do a little more damage in their second look at him.
Game 3 Carrasco v. Danny Duffy (2-3, 4.83). Duffy is a lefty who got lit up by the White Sox in his last start. He started on Opening Day against the Tribe and allowed two runs in 4.1 innings. Last year the Indians scored six runs in 12.1 innings off him.
Game 4 Civale v. Brady Singer (1-4, 5.58). Singer is 24 and although his ERA is brutal his last six starts were against the White Sox, Twins, and Cubs. He also faced the Indians in the first series of the season and allowed two runs in five innings.
It looks like tonight’s game will be the toughest with Keller on the hill. We need to get him out of there in 5-6 innings and Plesac needs to pitch well. On Tuesday he went six innings against KC and allowed one run. We need that again tonight.
