#21: Browns select Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Phil Taylor press conference should be starting soon on STO if you wanna watch it. If you turn it on now you'll have to deal with a little bit of Bruce Drennan (if you don't like him that is) until it comes on. They said soon.

The reason he was pushed down a lot of draftniks boards were because of unanswered questions and because a lot saw him as a 34 player only... Now with that said, a lot of those same people will agree that based on talent and athleticism he's a legit top-20 pick...

Great write-up as always. I wish they hadn't given up their 3rd-rounder, but at least they had the luxury of having a lot more chips to play with after fleecing Atlanta. Most importantly, they addressed need and got value.

One thing that you didn't mention is something I found interesting from your own mock draft (http://realcavsfans.com/showthread.php?36681-Smooth-s-1st-round-mock-draft). You predicted Taylor going at #18 in the first round. So, you also had him pegged as a legit top-20 pick before the draft got under way, too.

Interesting you mention that..

I know my biggest beef with the Phil Taylor trade wasn't so much the pick but what we gave up to get him... I didn't think it would take a 3rd rounder nor did I think it would be worth giving up a 3rd rounder..

Well after seeing who was drafted in the 3rd around after where the Browns would have picked, Heckert is looking like he's not as dumb as some thought he was...

Here's who was drafted from #70-#97:

Justin Houston, DE, Georgia
DeMarco Murray, RB, Oklahoma
Martez Wilson, OLB, Illinois
Stevan Ridley, RB, LSU
Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas
John Moffitt, OG, Wisconsin
Will Rackley, OL, Lehigh
Jurrell Casey, DT, USC
Austin Pettis, WR, Boise State
Leonard Hankerson, WR, Miami (FL)
Chris Culliver, S, South Carolina
DeMarcus Van Dyke, CB, Miami (FL)
Vincent Brown, WR, San Diego State
Jerrel Jernigan, WR, Troy
Mason Foster, OLB, Washington
Jah Reid, OT, UCF
Allen Bailey, DE, Miami (FL)
Drake Nevis, DT, LSU
Johnny Patrick, CB, Louisville
Shareece Wright, CB, USC
Curtis Marsh, CB, Utah State
Akeem Dent, LB, Georgia
Joseph Barksdale, OT, LSU
Chris Conte, FS, California
Kenrick Ellis, NT, Hampton
Curtis Brown, CB, Texas
Alex Green, RB, Hawai'i
Sione Fua, DT, Stanford

There's only a few guys that really stand out at me but other than that, there really aren't too many players who you can say "ahh man, I wish the Browns kept their 3rd rounder"... A lot of the guys that went were either guys that were at a position that you can still get later in the draft or at a position that the Browns already addressed... Overall though, giving up that 3rd rounder doesn't look nearly as bad as it seemed at the time...

Is James Brewer in the 4th or did he get drafted already?

Agreed. Also, looking back, if someone had said the Browns would get these 3 players at these 3 positions in the first three rounds, save a lot of $ on their 1st-round pick, and still have 2 extra Atlanta 4th-round picks and 1 extra Atlanta 1st-round pick, that's a pretty good haul.

Tony Grossi wrote the following about today's 3rd round:

Heckert said after picking Little that he would try to recoup a third-round pick lost in the trade-up in the first round to take Taylor. But he wasn't able to do it. Several players the Browns were tracking in the draft went off the board in that round. These included cornerbacks DeMarcus Van Dyke of Miami, Johnny Patrick of Louisville and Curtis Brown of Texas. Also taken in the round was another running back of some interest to the Browns, DeMarco Murray of Oklahoma.

Uncle Phil

I thought the EXACT same thing. Here's hoping he does what happens to Jazz at the end to QBs from around the league:

Yet, you cared when LeBron wore his cowboys hat and Yankees hat when the Indians and Browns were an absolute joke. Double standard

Not exactly. Where was LeBron born and raised? How about Phil Taylor? You mean a guy from Maryland might not cheer for Cleveland teams? How scandalous.

Thanks.

I finally watched this clip, and i'm really not seeing anything really impressive about Phil Taylor. He keeps getting pushed off the line and only a few times did i say " that was a good play by him"

He's meant to be a run stopper & a big body.

He can improve on being a run stopper, but with Rubin beside him, opposing OL's will need at least 3 blockers to hold their big bodies off, opening up things for our ends & LB's.

Yep, I think some people have the idea. I don't think Taylor is expected to be a Pro Bowl guy, nor do I think he'll ever be good enough. I think he's intended to be a solid started for a long time that's a big part of the chemistry of the defense.

Time for some Kevin Bacon action...

My girlfriend's friend's friend's boyfriend is none other than Phil Taylor...

That's funny. You said you had a girlfriend. I get the joke.
