#24: Tyus Jones - PG - Duke University (Traded to T'Wolves for #31 & #36)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
As for your 2nd paragraph, I'm neither. Been a physician for 20 years, and a basketball player for 40. And coached 3 kids who have now played in the NBA.

Dr Zeller I presume?

I would stop arguing with me and immediately operate on your 3 sons. All 3 had the distinction of being born without a backbone.

They are the first invertebrates to ever make it to the NBA.

Yes, all kids of humanity are my progeny...

Gotta love fans getting worked up about mid/late round, average NBA prospects. Never fails to happen...

Totally hate this trade, he is the perfect backup. It better make sense down the road.

For a team looking to compete for a championship this coming season, a rookie is not going to be the perfect b/u PG.

Honestly, our two PG's right now are 23 year old Irving, and 24 year old Dellavedova. It's not like we're aging at that position and need to start thinking about grooming a young guy. We're better served bringing in a vet.

If we were going to get a young backup at any position, it would have been at SF. But the guys worth drafting were already gone when we picked.

Delly had a 3.3 A/TO ratio during the regular season. He can take care of the ball to preserve a lead. What Delly can't do is score in bunches when the offense needs to go on a 8-0 or more run. That is the type of backup point guard they need most, and I agree a veteran who can defend SG as well is ideal.

He was a good pickup for Minny though. They have plenty of athleticism, need to have someone who can distribute and not make mistakes for when Rubio goes down. He's a perfect late-first add for them.

Agreed. I really like what Minnesota is doing.

Rubio/Tyus
Martin/LaVine
Wiggins/Shabazz
Garnett/Payne/Bennett/Bjelica
Towns/Dieng/Pekovic

Pretty solid lineup with a ton of youth and potential. They just need to find a good starting power forward (Garnett is done) and a better starting SG (preferrably in the 3 and D mold).

Somebody actually called Tyus slow footed...

:conf (2):

Some quotes from various scouting resources:

"He's not an exceptional athlete on top of that, possessing just average speed in the open floor, without a great first step or vertical leap to compensate."

"Lacks ideal quickness and athleticism most top flight PG prospects possess ... Doesn't possess a great first step. Struggles to beat quick opponents off the dribble"

"Even more of a concern for scouts is Jones' struggles on the other end of the floor. He was not a very good defender at the college level, even if he was able to improve as the season moved on. He has average lateral quickness, and his lack of strength does him no favors when trying to get over the top of screens."

"While most praise Jones’ intelligence, game management, and ability to show up in big moments, it’s clear his size and athleticism are limited. He isn’t quick enough to consistently drive in the paint or to keep a defender in front of him. At the professional level, an offense won’t succeed without at least a moderate athlete at the point guard position, and that’s the rub against Jones. It isn’t clear, right now, that he can be anything more than a moderate athlete when going up against NBA players."

"Does not have elite speed or athleticism."

"With so many of today’s top point guards being physical specimens, Jones doesn’t have the size, speed, and leaping ability of many of the NBA’s best.

This also hurts him defensively as it is unclear whether he will be able to keep the likes of John Wall, Russell Westbrook, and Stephen Curry in front of him on a regular basis."

Guess I'm just making it up. Like I've been saying, guy is a terrific offensive prospect because of how he was coached and how he doesn't turn the ball over. But unless he finds some new found athleticism, he is going to be a train wreck on defense.

His lack of athleticism is no doubt glaring but when I think of slow footed I think of big oafs like Kendrick Perkins.

Tyus is an average athlete.

Relative to his position, he is slow footed. I figured that was a given, especially with me comparing him to another PG in Kendall Marshall. Compared to all the PGs in the league right now, he is among the slowest and least quick ones there are. Just go look at DraftExpress' database of athletic testing and try to find any successful PGs who ran his full court or lane agility times or slower. There are none.

And Kyrie is an average athlete. Chris Paul is an average athlete. Steph Curry is an average athlete. Jones is a couple notches below, and for point guards in the NBA, that makes him a poor athlete. You are what you can defend in the NBA. Let's see if this dude can stay in front of some of the PGs in the West, cause I just can't picture it happening.

Can we please have another thread about some average player we did not pick?

Really, it can be so much fun, bellyaching over each of his future minor successes for the next 3-4 years and paying him way more attention than his own fan base... Please?

I made this thread when we initially drafted him, like I always do, and then reported the trade. No sense in deleting the thread for no reason, and it was moved to Around the NBA.

It was dying anyways (no post since last Saturday), until you decided to bump it up with your irrelevant comment. Quit your bitching and ignore the thread if you don't like it.
