#8: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State University

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I liked the Gilbert pick and I'm not as down on him as some but I would have expected more of a contribution by now.

Gilbert could come out in a few years dominating, we just don't know. You can't grade a draft after one year.

How long did it take for Gipson to turn the corner?

If you read the above you would see that I do like Gilbert and still think he can be a good player. I figured he would struggle early and he has. My point is that the struggles have lasted longer than I thought and it's reasonable to expect more out of him by now. Hence the disappointment.

I sincerely hope it's not his sense of urgency (or what would be a lack of it)... I like Gilbert's size and athleticism. It'd be sad to not have him pan out into some kind of starter.

I do agree with most of you.. It's still early to make the full judgment. We, as a fan base, need to understand how player development works better. Instant success is very difficult for any one player or team.

Isn't he coming off an injury? I thought someone on the Browns smashed him helmet to helmet while trying to make a tackle. I could be wrong...

Been more than a few weeks since someone explained how Gilbert and Williams don't play the same role, making their snap count irrelevant.

Gilbert's competition is Skrine, not Williams.

per the article I linked

"Now the weather has turned, Skrine is entrenched as the No. 2 cornerback and there's a new name getting the snaps behind him -- K'Waun Williams."

Cool quotes.

Williams plays inside in the nickel, Gilbert does not play inside in the nickel.

The difference is, Williams played inside and Skrine stayed outside.

"I don't like having an outside corner have to slide back and forth,'' said Pettine. "We wanted Buster to stay outside. (We) felt that K'Waun got a lot of quality reps in training camp (and) throughout the spring at the nickel, and he played extremely well.''

Your vendetta against the kid is getting kinda creepy since he was ruled out due to an illness today.

I'd be concerned if Gilbert wasn't improving but he is and it's showing in his performance on the field.

I have zero vendetta against him. Just disappointed in his progress thus far. Not sure what him being out with an illness today has to do with anything, as I didn't comment on it. I do think he has improved, but the facts are his snap count has decreased throughout the season because Haden, Skrine, and Williams are a better combo than Haden, Gilbert, and Skrine (with Skrine at the nickel obviously).

Hating on him for having a game-saving pass broken up was a nice touch.

But as you said earlier...

It's just laughable how much you'll stick your neck out so you can "be right" about evaluating a player.

But seriously though, Williams has had a pretty nice year as the nickel corner.

Gilbert eventually takes over Skrine's role as the other outside corner.

Pick6 will most certainly be continuing with this nonsense for years to come.

I'm not thinking this is all about Justin Gilbert being ready... Buster outside coupled with Williams inside is the optimal fit at this time. Gilbert won't really get in the discussion unless it's about him supplanting Buster on the outside. I don't think the Browns want to mess with Williams as he's likely headed for a bigger role in the nickel in the future.

At this point, I wonder if the Browns just let Skrine go at the season's end.. The Browns are going to have K'Waun hitting that nickel role all season next year and they'll have Gilbert/Nelson/Desir competing as well (maybe even a rookie). If there's one thing I think we're going to be seeing more of in Cleveland, it's larger/longer corners. Skrine, athletic as he may be, is not in the mold of a physical corner (ala Seattle, Farmer's draft history).
