Anthony Castrovince, of MLB.com, reports Cleveland Indians SP Fausto Carmona went 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA, giving up five runs (four earned) and 10 hits while walking none and striking out five in 13 1/3 innings in the Dominican Winter League. "Some of the adjustments that we wanted him to make when Spring Training starts, he did some of that during the winter," manager Manny Acta said. "And that enabled him to pound the strike zone. That stuff's still there. That night I saw him, he was pitching up to 93 (mph) with good sink, and he threw some good sliders. It's a matter of him understanding that he needs to get more of the plate and induce more contact, rather than trying to be too fine." Carmona is expected to be the team's No. 2 starter in 2010.

Ding ding ding.

If he's pitching like that during the season, I'll be a very very happy man.

Stay optimistic. I'll wait till I see him play before I make judgments.

13 innings for the winter season? How can that be enough to objectively judge a player's progress? I'm sure looking at Fausto's awful season last year you could find some 13 inning stretches with similar numbers that he put up in the Winter League, where hitters are worse.

I'm optomistic that Fausto will bounce back, but this news has nothing to do with it.
