Sup RCF,

I rarely do this but when I have in the past it's worked out pretty well..

Okay, so now that I've moved to California I've noticed that everyone and their mother drives a BMW. It's pretty strange; but rather than turning me off from the car, I've grown to appreciate it a great deal more -- and now I'm thinking of buying one myself.

In Hawaii, I drove a Mustang convertible. Great car, would recommend to anyone. I wanted a Camaro convertible but at the time it was a bit out of my price range.

Now I'm trying to decide between a BMW M3 hard-top convertible, a 650i soft-top convertible, or possibly something similar, like an M4 hard-top convertible (IIRC, M4's have retractable hardtops). The common thread here is that it must be a convertible.

I'm no BMW expert, and hence the question as I know they are popular cars and there should surely be plenty of folks here who can help me make a smart decision.

Just for a bit of additional info: if I get the M3, I'd likely add an aftermarket exhaust to make it run quieter (yes, quieter) as I'm past the days of wanting a loud, roaring sports car -- but I do love a car that performs well.

The Mustang GT, for me, was an all-around great driving car for all conditions. The soft-top did become an issue when someone tried to break into my car; but other than that, the weather in Hawaii never ever gets cold, unlike SoCal. I also plan on driving back to Ohio every now and then, hence the desire for a hard-top.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated...

If you are using the car for daily driving I think the M3/M4 is going to be pretty sporty unless that's what you truly want all the time. Personally I would go with the M3/M4, but the 650i is going to be much more comfortable. It's also a bit more exclusive if you're worried about not seeing a similar-looking car at every stoplight. Yes the M3/M4 is plenty exclusive but you have your run of the mill 335i/435i that sell like hot cakes and look 90% the same.

If you do get a 650i, get a used one. They lose a ton of value, more than the M3/M4. Look at 2012-2013 650i's on cars.com and seem how much cheaper they are than a new one.

driving from Pasadena to Ohio and back?! Holy hell. That's something I'd do maybe once in my life. Not "every now and then"
