How are mlb ratings? Basketball does not have the consistently rabid following of other sports like football, futbol, or cricket

I think the NBA and MLB have a problem with their model and it being tied to cable so much. As more families move away from cable it's going to hurt them more and more as time goes on. Casual fans turn into rabid fans especially when team get better. The question becomes how to they hook a person into becoming a casual fan if they have very little access or exposure to the local teams.

The NBA and MLB has moved away from putting games on broadcast tv. You might get a national game or two on the weekend but the local teams aren't getting the games on local TV any where close to as much anymore if they are at all. As a kid I didn't have cable but I still got to watch games when they came on local TV. Sometime it pissed me off cause it came on when my favorite TV shows were suppose to be on but I watched it because it was on. That made me a casual fan.

I know the steaming services makes it real easy go to preferred programming but I think the lost market of sports being on to just catch someone's attention by chance is really going to hurt the NBA and MLB. I think it's a big path to fandom.

Give me three pointers and dunks.

Post game and mid-range are bullshit.
Yeah. I think each team should either have to shoot it from halfcourt or attempt a dunk on every possession. If they don't, its a turnover. Would be so exciting!

The casuals don’t know.

Give me real life NBA Jam or give me minor league baseball.

The lane was widened first, to keep the big guys from dominating, much like the zone defense being illegal. Big guys got more mobile, so they added the three point line to draw them out, creating open baskets for cutters and dunks that made for Great highlight reels on ESPN type shows. Three point shooters became so proficient, they had to allow zones to keep some balance in the sport. Eleven foot hoops would be too strange, as would adding 4pointers or otherwise changing the value for buckets. I see lengthening 3 pointers by a few feet as the natural progression. For all the highlight plays and great athletes, the NBA was more entertaining in the bruising 70s and 80s, imo.
I think what we forget in all of this three point conversation is PLAYERS make the game exciting not the three point shot! There’s no athleticism tied to firing up a three pointer (skill for sure). But nothing excites a crowd more than a rim shaking dunk, an acrobatic finish at the rim or a flat out tough drive to the basket that results in an AND 1!
