Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If QBR ranks Mayfield and Josh Allen that closely its all I need to see about the metric to know it is utterly useless and provides no informative value

I know that sounds harsh, but any metric that has those 2 in the same stratosphere should honestly never be used because it just doesn’t work as an overall evaluative metric

I just did a quick Wiki, and it states what’s taken into consideration but I’m not seeing exactly how. I’d be curious to find that — unless I didn’t look hard enough.

ESPN made up a stat to help justify their crazy talk show hosts opinions. Of course it's bullshit.

Mayfield set the record for most touchdown passes in a season by a rookie in 13.5 games. There is 0 argument he is a bottom 10 starting QB

Reminds me of 538s garbage NBA metric

The article states that his was a tale of two seasons. Under Hue and Haley, we was ranked 31 out of 33 QBs. Under Kitchens, he was ranked No. 7 overall.

This question is relative, and the ranking is a bit misleading. QBR takes into account an entire season, and Mayfield had two distinct experiences for the Browns -- first with Todd Haley as offensive coordinator and then with Freddie Kitchens in that role. Under Haley in Weeks 1-8, Mayfield had a QBR of 35.8, which ranked 31st of 33 qualifiers. From Week 9 on, though, Mayfield's QBR was 70.1, which ranked seventh.

I think QBR is a pretty dumb stat, but the context helps it make more sense in this example.

I mean, you guys have to account for the fact that Mayfield wasn't that good his first six games. He showed flashes that made us see that he could be great but statistically he wasn't good. That weighs down his whole season grades.

Well he was a hell of a lot better than 31st of 33

I don’t even think that’s debatable

Point remains strong. This guy can caveat the QBR all he wants, but I'm not even bothering if the data points to 31 out of 33 and close to Josh Allen.

Well, to be fair, the same stat ranked him 7th overall the last eight games, so maybe it's just that our offense the first eight was dog shit and made everyone look worse.

If that is the case, then the stat is a poor way of ranking QB's, as opposed to ranking offenses.
