Stephen Hunter was signed and traded to Cleveland along with Drew Gooden and the rights to Anderson Varejao for Tony Battie and two second round picks. It happens in the NBA all the time to make trades financially work.
Also, I didn't run the numbers but did you also allow for Biedrins BYC status?
Assuming the Cavaliers wer going to Andris to a contract that equaled 50 million over 5 years, then his first year salary would be 8.15 million.
Andris = 4.075 million (BYC number for assumed 1st year salary)
Davis = 16.4 million
Cavaliers Trade
Varejao = 5.3 million (No longer BYC, as of 6/30/08)
Wally Szczerbiak = 12.2 million
Eric Snow = 3.3515625 million ( Maximum amount allowed for disabled player exception, for a player earning $6,703,125)
Because Andris is a BYC , his salary (for our purposes) is only $4.075 million
Andris can be traded for the Eric Snow Exception because Eric's exception,
$3,351,562.50 + 125% + $100,000 = $4,199,453.10 ... which is well within the range for the CBA
The trade also abides by the rule that an injured-player exception can only be used on a single player.
Wally Szczerbiak + Anderson Varejao's collective salaries are within the 125% + 100,000 rule also.
So, to answer the question of if I took the BYC into account, yes, I did.
Some other people wanted to talk about Andris scoring 10 and rebounding 10 a game, while shooting 62% (tops in the NBA)...and use that for a reason for why GS wouldn't do this trade. Well, yes... he shot 62% from the field.... but his field consisted of 97% shots within 5 feet of the rim. Anderson took lots of shots from further out (even though he is as poor a shooter as Andris). Andris benefited from Baron ,Ellis and Jax.... getting VERY easy shots that made his % higher. For a better idea of his true shooting ability, look at his FT%.
Also...Nobody has suggested that GS is rebuilding. However, the difference between our owner and theirs is that ours is willing to pay the luxury tax... theirs has given Mullin STRICT orders not to enter luxury-tax limbo!
They will be getting a "PUSH" talent-wise as far as Varejao/Andris goes. They are pretty-much the same player. Only Varejao is cheaper. They get 2 #1 picks for Davis, and an expiring contract they can deal at the deadline for more picks/talent.
Will it happen? I dunno... but there "
could" be some validity to the rumors that were floating around friday. Perhaps this deal, or something like it gets done...perhaps not. Gasol for Kwame... who would have thunk it?
