Bowe Bergdahl freed by Taliban after five years of captivity

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Army did its own investigation shortly after he disappeared, long before any White House interest., and the results of that investigation were known when the possibility of an exchange was being discussed. There were warnings from the Army that there might be a backlash, but those warnings were dismissed.

Fuck that piece of shit.

I may not have been a big fan of my time in the military. But you don't fucking run off and play house with your enemies. I'd shoot him in the head myself if I could.

What's the slanderous insinuation of Informative.. I know useful is tool.. @The Oi @SuperSurge
Reasons for giving informative rating:
  • Its not quite funny but amusing
  • Replaces 'thanks'; I don't like the info, but find it informative (i.e. a post breaks news about key players injury)
  • If I read a post and an image of the philosoraptor pops into my head
  • If I read it and think: 'note to self:' about persons thoughts
  • If a post contains high levels of hyperbole, since ' informative' implies I take them seriously
I don't really tthink any of these can be considered slanderous. If I'm really made uncomfortable but the hyperbole I resort to Larry David's torn and confused GIF.

Nah the EAYOR faggots have their own little inside joke to the ratings.

I don't care.

Fuck Bowe Bergdahl. Point still stands.

I'm on mobile so I can't paste the link, but there is currently a retired major general saying that the White House knew of his suspected desertion before they ever made the swap. According to him, there was an investigation that took place with personnel in Afghanistan who determined that Bergdahl had deserted. I'm not sure how viable it is, but the comments took place on MSNBC and the story was run by the Washington Free Beacon.

From what I've heard in private conversation, this is true.

I will never be happy until they bring back the damn rainbow.

The concern wasn't about backlash, so yes, in general those warnings would be dismissed. The concern was cost.

Why wasn't backlash a concern? Is Obama going out of his way to get people to hate him on the way out?

My understanding was that both Obama and Biden viewed securing Bergdahl's release being of paramount importance. This was also the view of the majority of the President's advisors within the Administration (in the defense department and CIA as well).

The idea was that he shouldn't be a prisoner to the Taliban, and beyond that, he may have been beheaded on camera (not ISIS style, but nonetheless).

Clinton worked to secure his release, but supposedly she was not onboard with the cost. Which, I'm told, was entirely due to the potential for political backlash (this really is the edge of a much larger issue tangentially related to this topic) which goes to Q-Tip's point.

Ultimately, Obama went with his advisors, including CIA, State (excluding Clinton - but including her staff), the veep, and the joint chiefs recommendation.

Obama, at this point, honestly gives two shits about politics or the next election... to the dismay of many Democrats, particularly Bill Clinton more so than anyone else. They are furious with him right now, as they tend to be.

p.s.
As always take this with a grain of salt, it's not first party and the person who relayed this was not "in the room" so during these discussions but was "around."

There were also warnings that his status as a potential deserter would not go over well. Those concerns were dismissed.

This is true. And I guess you could say they were "dismissed."

I think you could also say they were evaluated and deemed as less important than the alternative outcomes.

Clinton was the chief voice (in the minority surely) of dissent; but my understanding is her concerns were almost entirely political.

You will see this next year when Bergdahl is mentioned, as well as the deteriorating relations with Israel; especially in light of the recent Israeli elections, the Iran deal, and the apparent beginnings of a Sunni-Shia regional war that could quickly escalate to something larger.

But the release of Bergdahl was not a political or partisan decision. It was supported by the generals, by the CIA and largely by the State department.

That doesn't make it right though, and whether or not I agree, I understand the sentiment from many folks in this thread that it just wasn't worth it.
