Chudzinski named offensive coordinator
Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
01.20.2007

The Browns have hired a familiar face to be their offensive coordinator.

Rob Chudzinski, an Ohio native who coached the Browns' tight ends in 2004, will be introduced at a Saturday press conference. He spent the last two seasons as the Chargers' tight ends coach and interviewed with the Browns this week after the Chargers were eliminated from the AFC Playoffs.

The job gives Chudzinski his first full-time chance to be an NFL coordinator; he served as offensive coordinator under interim coach Terry Robiskie for the final five games of the 2004 season.

He was the offensive coordinator and tight ends coach at his alma mater, the University of Miami, from 2001-03 - Kellen Winslow's three seasons there - following five years (1996-2000) as the tight ends coach. Miami won the national championship in 2001 with current Browns quarterback Ken Dorsey as the starter.

A native of Toledo, Chudzinski will be 39 this spring. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Miami in 1994, serving in that role for two years before being named tight ends coach.

He played tight end at Miami from 1986-90, earned three letters, and was a member of two national championship teams (1987 and 1989). He graduated with a B.A. in business administration in 1990 and earned a MBA in 1996.

Another first time OC, brilliant.

Great... also one that has been on the Browns before.. under Robiske none the less.

The only light? That he'll likely maximize the potential of Winslow. The darkness? Winslow will be overwhelmed by the 5th game.

Actually, he was OC for the Browns once Butch left. Plus, what big name out there is really going to come to this situation, knowing that if there are any problems this year, they will most likely have to find a new job next year? I liked Chudzinski at Miami, we'll see what he does here as an OC that gets to set his own offense again.

Michael Turner anyone? I think with Chudzinksi coming from San Diego, he's going to go after Turner hard...

Honestly, this is probably the best they could have done. What established OC would come here knowing that he will be whacked when Romeo gets the axe at the end of the season? This guy will be here for one year and then gone when the new head coach brings in his own OC.

It sucks knowing this team is still 2..3 years away after we were supposed to be 2 years away 2 years ago..

We have been two years away for 8 seasons now :chuckles:

Let's just hope we go hard after Cowher after this season. If they don't bring in an experienced head guy we will always be in rebuilding mode.

I wanted Greg Knapp... But, good point... That's if, I should say when :chuckles:, Romeo has a losing season...

This is good. Chud knows how to work with high powered targets:

1. He was OC in Miami.

2. He has commanded players like, Andre Johnson, Kellen Winslow, Jeremy Shocky, Bubba Franks, Clinton Prottis, etc...

3. He has developed Winslow, Shockey, Franks into Elite TEs.

4. He worked with Antonio Gates.

5. He is all about the TEs.

6. And since our future is Winslow, it only makes sense to put 2 and 2 together.

7. Wasn't he the OC at the time when the Browns and Bangels went toe to toe and almost put up 100 points combined?

I am pretty happy!

We dont have a chance at Turner, I dont understand why fans keeping wasting their time talking about that guy.

I love the browns def next season with baxter, bodden, russel, jones, roye, davis, wimbley, jackson and mcginest back.

is daylon coming back?? im not sure if his contract is up. I think it is.

Baxter won't be back. He tore both patella tendons... only one person has ever come back from that injury in the NFL, and it took at least 2 years if memory serves.

Alot of people, if the new oc came and his offense played well and the browns continue to suck, romeo will be gone and he could be in line for the head coaching job. That's about the only reason I can think of

It looks like they don't want someone to threaten romeo...

Exactly. It is beyond me how clueless everyone is, they think we can get anyone and everyone.

They are going to tender him and it'll take a 1ST ROUND PICK to get him.
