"It was an honor to be here," Laurinaitis said. "To be with this level of players, it's kind of surreal, me being the young guy. I was in high school when these guys were (already) in college. I definitely could not have done it without the entire defensive line and the whole defense."
I love the class, humility, and team first attitude Tressel's players exude.

Re: Laurinaitis Brings Home Nagurski Trophy

This is the Defensive Heisman, since a pure defensive player has never won the Heisman. Troy's going to win the offensive Heisman this weekend. Ohio State also has finalists for the Humanitarian Heisman (Penton) and the Academic Heisman. (Anotonio Smith? Not sure.)

Laurinaitis of course won the Nagurski Trophy for being the top defensive player.

Joel Penton has won the Wuerffel Trophy, the award is given to the "best human being" in college football. Called the "Humanitarian Heisman".

Troy Smith brought home two more national awards on Thursday as he was announced as the Walter Camp Player of the Year and the Davey O'Brien Quarterback Award winner. He has also been named as one of three finalist for the Heisman this weekend (along with Quinn and McFadden).

The Walter Camp All-America Team, which honors the nation’s best college football players, was also announced. OSU's Smith, Quinn Pitcock and James Laurinaitis were all first-team All-Americans.

I dont think that James is that great. Hes really good and maybe I feel this way because I dont pay much attention to other players in college football.

Vernon Gholston is the freaking man. He needs to win the buffness award.

I don't know if you guys heard, but some kid out of Cleveland won the Heisman:

Smith’s Heisman victory was historical in nature. He drew a record 87 percent of the first-place votes, breaking the mark set last year by Reggie Bush of USC. And his margin of victory stands as the second highest in Heisman history, trailing that of O.J. Simpson of USC in 1968.

The Bednarik Award

Each year, the voters are asked to find a previously esteemed award and to give it to Paul Posluszny. Last year, they found the Butt-Kiss Award and thought it was a nice tribute to Paterno, err Posluszny, I mean. This year, they bestowed another lifetime achievement award on Paul – the Bednarik, which (in some prior years) had gone to the nation’s best defensive lineman. I feel badly about picking on Paul because he is a terrific player, seems like a great kid, was hurt all year and he doesn’t need this unnecessary glare of the spotlight to establish his chops. But, come on people, Paul wasn’t the best defensive player in his league (Woodley) and wasn’t even the best linebacker – on his own team!

The football team held its annual team banquet Dec. 3 and several awards were handed out.

Senior quarterback Troy Smith was selected by his teammates as the Buckeyes’ 2006 Most Valuable Player.

Smith guided this year’s squad to an outright Big Ten title, a 12-0 regular season record and a berth in the 2006 BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz.

The 6-1 signal caller from Cleveland Glenville completed 67 percent of his passes and threw for 2,507 yards and a school record 30 touchdowns. He also ran for 233 yards and a score in improving his record as a starter to 25-2.

Senior defensive back Antonio Smith was selected by his teammates as the winner of the Bo Rein Award as the team’s most inspirational player. Smith, a former walk-on, was converted to scholarship in the spring and wound up winning first-team All-Big Ten honors this season.

Meanwhile, Stan White Jr. received the John W. Galbreath Award for excellence in academics. White, the Buckeyes’ starting fullback, won first-team Academic All-America honors this past year.

Defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock was named winner of the Bill Willis Award as the Buckeyes’ outstanding defensive player. Pitcock, a senior from Piqua, Ohio, led the team with eight sacks.

David Patterson, Pitcock’s running mate at defensive tackle, was named winner of the Jim Marshall Warrior Award.

Ted Ginn Jr. was selected as the winner of the Archie Griffin Award as the outstanding offensive player on the team. Ginn led the team in receptions and set the Big Ten record for career punt return touchdowns.

Outstanding first-year awards went to freshman tailback Chris Wells on offense and cornerback Donald Washington on defense. Wells finished his rookie year with 567 yards and seven touchdowns on 102 carries, an average of 5.7 yards per carry. Washington started at corner when the Buckeyes were in a nickel package and had 34 tackles.

Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez was a first-team pick by the coaches, while Ginn was a first-team pick by the media.
