Cavs sign Chris Crawford again

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Does anyone have an explanation for this comment by Jason Lloyd?

The Cavs were forced to release Crawford for luxury tax purposes. Had he still been on the books, it would've complicated Thursday's trade for Keith Bogans, whom the Cavs flipped to the 76ers on Saturday for a trade exception.

When Crawford was initially released, salary cap guru Mark Deeks seemed confused as to why.

Cavs didn't want to go more than $4Mil over the Apron and keeping Crawford during the two days that Bogans was on the team would have made the Cavs pass that boundary. It is challenging to calculate the exact total team salary for these calculations, since min salary players often count differently against luxury tax than they do against the salary cap.

So it was Crawford's guaranteed salary of $20K (which is what was reported) or his entire non-guaranteed salary of ~$500K that would have put them over the apron? As you say, the different ways of calculating min salary players complicates the math. So they waived him, paid him his $20K guarantee, then re-signed him -- I wonder if they gave him any more guaranteed money to sign the second time?

The apron salary totals are calculated differently than the salary cap totals

So:
  • $20K guaranteed salary for Crawford counted against the cap and the apron after he was waived
  • Varejao's unlikely $1Mil bonus only counts against the apron if his contract was signed under the new CBA. It might not have counted against the apron since it was signed under the old CBA
  • Everyone earning less than $915,243 (the 2 year vet min) counted as $915,243 against the apron, (Delly, Harris, & Kirk )

If Crawford was not waived he would have counted as $915,243 against the apron.

I thought that once upon a time, second round draft picks that earned less than $915,243 counted at actual salary for luxury tax purposes, but I can't seem to find that rule any more. That was one of the reasons I was surprised that they traded Powell, since he might have only counted as $500K against the tax and apron if that was correct, but maybe it isn't the case any more.

Welcome back Chris Crawford, I hardly know you.

Figured I'd give the kid a bump. Out of the 3 guards fighting for a spot, he looked the best. Didn't back down when LeBron posted him up and stripped him, played within the system and worked himself to some open jumpers on offense, and I was fairly impressed with how well he was able to stay in front of Kyrie on defense...even on that turnaround out of bounds shot Kyrie hit in the 2nd period was defended well by him. With Powell getting traded and opening up another spot (and Ray Allen being a huge unknown right now), there is a good chance one of him, Price, or Holt makes the squad and sticks for the first few months until players start getting bought out.

I don't think Holt can make the squad because he's under contract in Europe. He doesn't have an NBA contract. Looks like the last spot is down to Crawford, Price, or the ghost of Ray Allen.
