Let's see if I can summarize the team from the top to the bottom.
First, I could feel the competitive balance just wasn't there, but seriously, weren't you guys expecting the same thing? Maccabi just popped out at 87-60 in the third. You could tell the shift was already happening at 47-30 in the second. All this proves is that Maccabi wasn't ready for the NBA competition and we could easily move past 40% of the teams in the league, you know, the ones that don't have the talent to keep going. Which means we'll definitely be better than the 33-49 team from last year.
I can feel the difference in coaching, not just from the record but when we were executing with scrubbier guys. I really look forward to the change that Phil Jackson/Greg Popovich provided for their squads. And you know there will be a change, because 1) the ball movement and 2) I spent the entire second half before this game watching game 2 of Cleveland and Orlando in 2009 where the difference in coach caliber was substantial.
Next, again... the talent was clear. We could just run these guys out without play call, and we did a few times before finally throwing out Kirk, Harris, Jones, etc. LeBron barely playing 20, Irving and Love barely playing past 30. We were killing them with Dion, Shawn, Tristan, Andy, Lou, Brendan, Matt. It was fun and would've been cool to make an unofficial run at that record for margin of victory that we also did against the Heat in 1991 by nearly 50+ points.
Going back to LeBron, maybe he was forcing some silly shots, but that's because he hardly tried. You could see he's got the shot mechanics kicked in, he could catch and shoot a few times and wouldn't need to do anything else. And this is with some back issues.
Kyrie looked good. He could run over Dwyane if he wanted to. And he's got good catch and shoot mechanics himself. Having LeBron as a threat will open up the avenues for Kyrie. Notice that once LeBron sat, they couldn't stop Kyrie either. The only problem is that he needs to open up lanes for Love. And this is saying something since Love hardly went for most opportunities. But he was a threat, since they were covering him close and he still grabbed the boards and went for the home run accordingly.
Dion was key. Other guys not doing much? Who cares! Dion is showing the fruits of his labors with the drive and shoot game. There was a blemish but he made up for it. Tristan was good too. Kind of resembling Andy a little, finally. I know you make it your duty to verbally attack him, Rch, but you have to admit he looked good. But I won't say much yet. He hasn't proven it's all set yet.
And don't get me started with Andy. The ultimate yo-yo of doom and disaster. Can't even say much, except it was funny that he made a lob attempt into a made field goal. Louie got the same stuff. Just can't make it like Andy. Haywood wasn't great but maybe he'll do something more. Maybe. Shawn Marion makes the ultimate bargain. He used to play a little power forward, so I'm so f#ckin' grateful we have him. Mike Miller (forgive me for not mentioning him earlier) was awesome. Perfect for making buckets. I used to wonder when we'd reliably make the damn buckets. The chain reaction that started with getting LeBron was awesome. And having Delly was great too. And having guys at the end of the bench like Joe Harris and James Jones was great too. And Alex Kirk knew when to block shots as well.
I'm liking this direction, we'll just have to wait and see.
