I think it would be though to legislate something like this. Where do you draw the line? If you ban protesting 1 mile from funerals, they will set up 1 mile, 1 foot away. That's the first amendment for you, its tricky.

Right now, the only way to make these shitheads go away is to ignore them. But that will never happen unfortunately.\

As alluded to a couple posts earlier, they stick themselves in emotional situations (ie, soldiers funerals), and hope to get a rise out of someone, who they can in turn sue. They get away with it by hiding behind the first amendment.

That's just one of several loopholes in the law of the nation and Constitution that they take advantage of. Fred Phelps used to be a lawyer (before he was disbarred for being a fucking wack job); he definitely knows what he's doing when it comes to milking the system.

I'm in agreement with those that question why they Westboro Craptists can't be stopped from doing what they do. What's the downside to illegalizing disruption of funerals? Free speech loop-hopes are taken way too far in this country in bad faith.

This would be an example of stretching free speech in bad faith. I'm not sure what the perimeter is of how far away from a funeral they have to be, but it should be something laughable like five miles.

I cant fathom why it's so difficult to stop these people or to pass laws that stop them. So stupid.

This country's legal system remains an embarrassment. Laws are strict in all the wrong areas and irresponsibly light in the areas where society can really be protected from scum like the Craptists and their free speech or TJ and his violent crime.

Sorry for the soap box. I just get angry when I see problems that are easily solved just being ignored repeatedly.

When Mr. Rogers died, I was living in Pittsburgh, PA. Fred Phelps's crew protested the funeral, and I learned a lot about their tactics at the time. His church are scum for suing people who physically react to them, filming the protests and finding someone who assaults them. It works in city after city, and they somehow make a profit off of angry people reacting to them. Hopefully, if people from RCF show up, they can spread word that the protesters are only there to try to bait people into a lawsuit.

BTW, I also held up a large banner that read "Rock on, Mr. Rogers" during the funeral and stood by protesters from the Fred Phelps' camp, repeatedly shouting, "This man here just touched my ass inappropriately!!" I just wanted to make sure they had no chance at filming a chance altercation.

So if you guys see the protesters filming in Chardon, jump into the view of their cameras and shout: "This man touched my ass inappropriately!!" Do it just for me.

Well, I briefly brought up TJ's brother before.. and I think he plays a huge role in this. He, like his brother was a very outgoing kid at one point. He got hooked on drugs.. and eventually TJ got into it as well. I said earlier he showed up one year just a completely different person.. it was all the different drugs he and his brother were taking.. hardcore drugs. No one really paid attention to TJ.. it was all about his brother and his struggles with depression and drug abuse. His brother has been in and out of jail for drugs and other stupid stuff. His brother actually is getting released soon I believe.. though im not certain. I do know that he's messed himself up so bad he's barely human.. he can't even cross a street by himself anymore and he's just 19. TJ was really just known as the little brother.

I stumbled upon this blog post by one of TJ's brothers exes.. it pretty much mirrors what I said:

I’m not sure if P was my first love, or just someone who I connected with on a different level than others, but we just got each other. And we still do. P is one of my greatest friends. I have been with him through everything that has gone on between the families. I know things others don’t. Seeing TJ just makes me think of everything I could have done for D. Everyone paid so much attention to D that no one even thought about what was going on in TJ’s head. No one knew what was wrong. Everyone said he was the sweetest boy, and I really believe that. I don’t know him like others, but I do know him. I have sympathy for him. I don’t care what people say. The hatred so many people have for the shooter really makes my heart sad.

I have sympathy for him too. I feel no anger. I feel a great sadness and melancholy that this kid was driven to do this. That does not mean he should be exempt from the harshest punishment the law can offer.
