If we make that deal for next year we are so razor thin its not even funny. And we'll push to the full 85 million just on vet min contracts and the taxpayer MLE. So next year, when the cap raises to 89, the built in raises to our existing contracts will have us above the cap again. We'd have again nothing more than the tax payer MLE to add to a razor thin team and we would have depleted a lot of our contracts and assets to maneuver to be able to do a S&T for a guy like Aldridge this year.
So added up, we'd have now just risked two seasons on a razor thin roster which while amazing and top heavy, would have no ability to withstand a single major injury, let alone the three we sustained this year.
Now perhaps next offseason would be a time to revisit that potential change in team building strategy. Another year to evaluate Love on this team. Andy's contract not being fully guaranteed after this upcoming season. The much larger cap number and tax apron. My play for this year is to go all in full chips, push the tax with every player we have and every mechanism we have to add more talent/depth this summer.
I realize I've been responding with the same basic premise for months, so clearly we're both pretty dug in on our respective outlooks and I'll do my best to not respond with the same old reply in the future.
Fair enough. It comes down to this MirO, would you trade our depth and flexibility for LaMarcus Aldridge on 4-year 20M deal?
I say yes.
You say no.
The question is not whether it can be done. It can be done. It's whether or not you think our depth, our bench, and our potential to add to that bench using exceptions is of greater net value towards the goal of winning a championship over the course of the next season, than LaMarcus Aldridge.
And yes, we are way apart on this, because I do not value the bench players we have, even coupled with the flexibility of the exceptions we could use, as much as I would having another bonafide superstar.
Yes, I'd be willing to live with the hard cap, and a few vet min players. Without a doubt.
Fair enough.
Year one you've got the incredible starting five and Mozgov on the bench. Beyond that tax payer MLE and minimum contracts will take you all the way up to 85.
Year 2 the only way to add to that is by trading one of our 6 good players or by more vet minimum guys and and the tax payer MLE again.
Zero margin for injury.
Yet Iggy got MVP and they might not have won without him. It isn't even about their bench having "great" performances as much as it was for them to play adequate enough to give the starters a rest. We didn't have anyone capable on our bench of even doing that. It's a star driven league. So much was made of GSW's depth, but other than Igoudala, who made an impact off the bench? Livingston had a good game. Lee had one decent game. Speights except for Game 1 was invisible. Bogut fell out of the rotation. Ezeli made little impact. Barbosa hit a couple shots, but was nothing of note.
You live and die with your top players. You can find ways to scrap together a few capable players off the bench if you are a legit contender.
Disagree with this. They wouldn't have won game 1 without Speights. Livingston was a solid defender and they could afford to run steph off the ball or have him sit with him. Honestly we may have one the series if we had a Barbaso type who could have created offense. It's a star driven league. I didn't see you mention Moz /Harris who would be part of that bench. It comes down to this MirO, would you trade our depth and flexibility for LaMarcus Aldridge on 4-year 20M deal?

Not debating you(I like the deal initially) but did you have them cleared out?
IMO it can be done,as this year the Cavs cannot trade their first round pick which they can use on a backup PG or a SF which would add early on to the depth.
Don't know if that second rounder would be in that trade or used this year.
Ezeli had 10 points in 11 minutes in game 6. Barbosa seemed to come in and make shots. Livingston made a ton of plays for them. These contributions are what ended up beating us in the end.
As for Aldridge, don't want him. I don't think we would be better with him at center that Moz. He is not a dirty work kind of player either and when his shot is not falling he doesn't do much to make up for it. He shot 32% in the playoffs this year on 22 shots per game! For a 6'11" big man, that is truly awful.
I am convinced we would have beat the Warriors had we just pounded the ball down low to Moz and TT. They were having their way down there, just didn't do it enough. Too many bad contested jump shots at the end of shot clock. Aldridge does not help this at all. We need a few lights out 3 point shooting wings is what we need. We have plenty of bigs at this point if Love and TT come back.
Alot of this discussion is moot in the Griff said yesterday he's trying to keep most of what we have intact. I see Marion, Haywood, Perkins roster spots opening up.
