Cleveland Indians Offseason News, Notes, and Rumors

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If you guys havent realized it yet, i dont care what u think about me and my posts.....and ill keep posting

The Wright rumor is a few days old- his team option becomes a player option if he is dealt, which makes him a one-year rental. Kills his trade value for the Mets. He isnt moving. Upton rumors are months old, and someone that has already been brought up several times in the past few weeks in rumors. Ramirez rumors are old, he isnt being dealt- sucks all themomentum out of the Marlins spending spree, plus him and Reyes are buddies.

Youk is a classic bad body aging fast. He can hit but he looks like a guy who may never be fully healthy again.

Okay...so...who is the mystery trade?

Hanley may be buddies w Reyes but he definitely doesn't want to play 3B. And how would it suck the momentum out of the spending spree? They have Reyes, they're looking at Pujols, Buhrle, Fielder...ascab isn't some slouch.

Here is one guess...

Are Indians in on Brandon Belt?

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reported Tuesday night that the San Francisco Giants were “far down the road” on two potential trades. One of the deals turned out to be to acquire Angel Pagan from the New York Mets for Andres Torres and Ramon Rodriguez. But the other is still up in the air.

Meanwhile, Indians GM Chris Antonetti told a group of reporters that he was working on a deal “that would be very surprising if it came to fruition,” according to MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian. He didn’t give any more specifics than that.

“I’m pretty sure I could give you 50 guesses,” Antonetti said, “and you probably wouldn’t get it.” I’ll accept the challenge and offer mine: Brandon Belt.

Belt, 23, is a highly regarded first-base prospect—he placed 23rd on Baseball America‘s 2011 prospect list—but he struggled in his first taste of MLB action this year. A mediocre first partial season shouldn’t be enough to downgrade a player of his age and pedigree too much, but that Baggarly doesn’t see him as the Giants’ 2012 first baseman is telling about his current role.

If Belt is available, he’d be an intriguing fit for the Indians. His age and high ceiling mean he could be an impact player with the Tribe for years to come. If the Giants really are down on him he’d be a solid buy-low candidate, and given the lack of current alternatives he’d presumably have every chance to win the every first base job in Cleveland.

Belt hit .225/.306/.412 with nine home runs, 21 RBI, and 0.7 fWAR in 63 games with the Giants this year, but raked in the minors, hitting .309/.448/.527 in 49 games at Triple-A.

In fairness I don’t know that this would have ever occurred to me as a real possibility if not for the coincidental stories of Cleveland and San Francisco’s mystery trades, and even if the Giants are down on Belt he almost certainly wouldn’t come cheap. But nothing’s impossible, and Antonetti said we’d be surprised.

A guy with a high talent level and topping prospect lists but blows in his tastes of the Majors so far.

We already have a guy like that.

Marte? JK.

They need to stick to mid-level trades that net us the Santana, Choo, Adrubal, C Perez level guys.

The Laporta / Marte deals is where the wheels fall off.

I wouldn't be upset if we got Belt as long as we didn't give up a lot, but I mean...we do have LaPorta. He's basically the same thing.

What about Ryan Zimmerman? Its been reported his contract talks with the Nationals have not gone very well. Right handed bat, corner infielder, it would be surprising. Has about 2 years, 25 million left. Indians have a two year window roughly. Chiz and others to the Nats perhaps.

It's not even close to the same thing.. LaPorta has been in the majors for a few years, last year was Belt's rookie year, and the Giants were basically fucking around with him. Never gave him consistent at bats, constantly played Aubrey Huff over him for no reason. He's better then LaPorta.

That is straight out of Wedge's playbook.

LaPorta has also been constantly injured. You could argue this has hindered his chance to shine.

They're pretty similar, I think.

At face value I take Belt because of his youth and the reasons you state, however the fact remains he's just another top prospect who sucked during his time (albeit, not a full season yet) in the majors.

Acta just told us @mlbnetworkradio that after the signings of Lowe and Sizemore they couldn't afford a high payroll bat unless they move $

Good thing we got Lowe, though.
