European bigmen tend to play more like small forwards offensively, especially in offensive perimeter skills like shooting and passing. The European game also has become more physical than the NBA ever since the NBA got rid of hand checking. In international play, players can "chip" a player who drives into the lane. In the NBA, they would call a blocking foul. Most importantly, the NBA lets star players get away with more than role players. NBA refs never call a play equally for a rookie compared to a Dwayne Wade, especially in the regular season.
