Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

I know that with myself, there is a direct correlation between my tenacity and how in shape I am in. I consider myself to be a fairly aggressive player, but when I am out of shape, I am completely off my game. Am I trying to compare myself to a rookie taken top 5 in the draft? No. I am, however, trying to stress the importance of being in game shape.

Agreed. Plus, as noted, the boys still practice in the morning on gameday. They've been doing two-a-days. If you're a little out of shape, it's going to show. That said, if Waiters finds a groove tonight, drops 24 on decent percentages and gets some calls, his average is up to 15 per game and we think he's D-Wade. It's just a case of how fickle fans are.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

I definitely see what you're saying here, but Waiters has not been quite as aggressive as I expected he would be or near the levels of Russ or Iverson. Granted, it's just Summer League, but those two, particularly Russ, never really floated around the way Waiters has been (save a few streaks where he starts jacking J's). On the other hand, I think Waiters is a bit more conscientious than those two in that even if his shot selection is reflective of his age, he is making a more conscious effort to reign it in.

agreed. it's pretty obvious he has been reigning it in, not being himself...which is fine.

the only thing that worries me is his ability to be a game changer off the ball - you can't either be jacking up shots and scoring or disappearing. I guess we'll get a better idea when the season starts and when Kyrie is in the game.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Cavs need to change rookie policy this year: Zeller has sole responsibility for getting the donuts.

---
From Jason Lloyd: BScott said he's not concerned about Waiters' slow start to summer league. "The biggest thing with him is conditioning. Once he gets in shape, all the other stuff will start to come."

And Kevin Jones is on hand-smackin' duty once the donuts arrive....

On the one hand, it's something of a relief because conditioning can be fixed.

But honestly, I wonder why did didn't come to summer league in shape. Lots of other guys managed to get/stay in shape even though the season ended in March, so why didn't Dion? Looks like this will be something the coaches will have to stay on top of with him.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Fixing his condition will just eliminate it as an excuse.

He won't be standing looking around anymore!

Fixed it for U..

I don't understand your point. Of course he may be a disappointment even after he gets in shape -- that's an unknown, and his game may just not measure up.

But where there is a concern about explosiveness and seeming effort, it would be more troublesome if he had those problems and conditioning wasn't an issue. This is at least a possible and correctable explanation for what some of us are seeing.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

One thing that keeps me positive about Dion Waiters: I'd rather have him AND Tyler Zeller than JUST Bradley Beal, which is what we would have come out of this draft with had we done the deal with charlotte to move up to #2.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Interesting. When I saw his personal fouls hit 6, I assumed his night was over... But, clearly you can't foul out of a Summer League game, because he finished the night with 7 fouls.

So, with that in mind, let me readjust his numbers... 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 7 fouls, 5 turnovers.

Doesn't really change my initial point.

If your point is that somehow Waiters doesn't look worse than T-Rob it should change because T-Rob looks better than Waiters at this point it's undeniable. T-Rob just isn't being put in the position to succeed while Waiters is out of shape and/or shooting poorly.

What's completely, totally, 100% rightfully deniable though is if that even matters or is relevant at all. (PS- it's not... if it's still happening a season and a half from now? Then let's start to really worry.)

Scott's comment confirms one concern (that Dion didn't come in to camp in the best of shape) and fails to dismiss the other (his poor play).

It just doesn't sound like the work ethic is up to par with what the organization has been targeting - and taking plays off on D wasn't a good sign either. Scott may beat it out of him in short order, but something I thought the Cavs would have weeded out - now has to be considered a concern.

Too early to call... At the time of the draft I thought it was likely that MKG would fall to us at #4 and under that assumption I wouldn't have given up anything to move up for Beal. I also would have taken Drummond rather than Waiters or TRob. It would have been harder to get a competent wing, though.

Waiters+Zeller could work out real well for us, but we're a long way from being able to conclude that.

Waiters reminds me of Baron Davis in his dribble drive game, although his passing is vastly inferior to the baron. Dwyane Wade is a stretch comparison, think of other fat, lazy yet very talented guys with excellent handles. So far I'd say Baron Davis with a tendency to shoot rather than pass the rock.
