Miami- Mike Doss can't deliver any messages to the Chicago Bears. Knee surgery in October ended his season.

But he has a message for the Browns.

"Tell [General Manager] Phil Savage if he doesn't sign me in free agency, he'd be making a big mistake," Doss said Thursday at the Indianapolis team hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The Colts' safety is in the final year of his contract. A calf injury in training camp sidelined Doss and gave rookie Antoine Bethea an opportunity. Doss stepped back into the lineup when All-Pro safety Bob Sanders was hurt and played well until tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on Oct. 22 against Washington.

Doss said he'd like to be reunited with Browns defensive back coach Melvin Tucker, his coach at Ohio State during the 2002 season when the Buckeyes won the national championship.

"Playing in a dome is clean and nice," said Doss, who starred at Canton McKinley. "But back home, in the rain, the sleet, the snow, the lake effect, that's real football to me."

Doss, who expects to be healthy for spring minicamps, said he hopes Savage makes room not only for him but for Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.

"Troy told me before he left Ohio State his name would be bigger than mine, and it is," said Doss. "We've talked about both going to Cleveland together to play for the Browns."

Although Savage has collected players with ties to Northeast Ohio, he might not bite on Doss in free agency because of young safeties Sean Jones and Brodney Pool. The Browns also are debating whether to re-sign free agent Brian Russell.

He also reiterated this on Kenny Roda's radio show... He was almost begging... I found it quite surprising with the biggest game of his life approaching...

My thoughts on this...

You'd love to have a guy on your team who wants to be here and try his hardest day-in-and-out...

We could move Pool to CB, saving lots of money.. We'd end up looking like: Bodden, Holly, McCutcheon, Pool, Perry and Minter... Pretty solid...

Doss would provide us some good run-support...

Re: Former Buckeye wants to come home

MIKE DOSS!!! Yeah! Man that news just made my day. This guy was a true leader for the Buckeyes in 2002. This guy will add some energy to the D as well as some passion, since he wants to come here. There's something about him that no other player has in football. It's the way he leads that's so unique. That bad weather quote displays it fairly well.

I love Pool and i love Jones, but Pool could play CB and Doss would be great help with the run like you said.

we have 33 million in cap room and this would be a very nice signing to help the secondary.

I love the idea.

Re: Former Buckeye wants to come home

I wouldn't mind Doss at all...

Not sure how well Pool can play corner ? But I would take Doss on the squad..

Re: Former Buckeye wants to come home

Pool is nice and all, but Doss is one Buckeye I'd love to get on this team.

Russell, Jones, Doss and Pool battling it out for the saftey spot. Obviously Jones got his spot locked up, but Id welcome Doss.

He's out for the year, torn ACL.

The more I think about this, I wouldn't really mind him. Although we have more pressing needs.

Re: Former Buckeye wants to come home

Pool would be a pretty good corner. His starting stint against the Panthers he played well on Keyshawn.

Re: Former Buckeye wants to come home

Get it done Phil. Too bad we won't go get him and Clements. That much money would simply neglect the OL and we know how I feel about that. Anyway,....

How bout this for you:

NT- 3rd/4th Rounder
DE- Fraser
DE- Branch

LB- Wimbley
LB- Davis
LB- Leon Williams
LB- DQJ

CB- Bodden
CB- Clements
S- Doss
S- Jones

Re: Former Buckeye wants to come home

Fraiser isn't starting in the NFL anytime soon..

I dont think Doss would be a lot of money, Clements will though.....they better sign some OL, I dont care who we sign there better be a lot of OL in the mix.

Re: Former Buckeye wants to come home

I'd love to have Doss...I wanted him when he came out but we weren't high enough in the 2nd or low enough in the 1st to get em...

Doss
Clements
Dielman / Steinbach

EXACTLY what Ive been thinking of Pool all along. Ive been telling my dad that Pool just isnt the guy that we need at safety, and that we needed Mike Doss on the Browns. Of course I dont post it on here then but whatever.

If Doss and Clements are signed the secondary is set, but that old problem with the line still is haunting us.

weres Orlando Pace's plea to come back when you need it. :chuckles:

Re: Former Buckeye wants to come home

as you all know I love UM and Mike Doss is one of my all time least favorite Buckeyes

saying that I would love to get him on the team especially if he is begging to play for us...that doesnt happen often...I will take Doss and Let Russel go in FA

Re: Former Buckeye wants to come home

Why do all these guys want to come back here? Don't they know how the story goes...

I was thinking the same thing. I'm glad they want to play here but they probably don't know what they'd really be getting themselves into.
