Draft Battle: Chris Grant & Danny Ferry .vs. Conventional Board Wisdom

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Jury is still out for waiters, but he is in the mix as a top four player from the draft. We passed on Drummond, and it appears he is more Dwight Howard than Kwame Brown, but that was an unknown before he hit an NBA court. We knew Dion was a baller, so we took him at four. Wth Beal and Ghilchrist injured, he is looking like a good choice. I think that the ROY for the 2012 draft class will be either Drummond or Lillard, and in my opinion Lillard has earned it more than Drummond. He is not only starting, but he also runs the team.

As for Thompson there is no way to deny the objective evidence that he is the best player at this point from the top ten in the 2011 draft. He has been selected for the rising stars both years, and he is starting and averaging a double double at not quite 22 years old. We made an unpopular call that turned out to be a good one.

some hindsighter will argue that Klay Thompson, Faried, or perhaps Leonard are playing better. But no GM was seriously considering any of these guys in the top ten.

Edit: If we had taken Drummond at four, who do we get at 17? There was not a decent small forward or shooting guard available from that spot on... So we have Drummond, but we are stuck with Chuck Jumpers as our best other guard... It is not clear to me that Drummond> Waiters + TZ

The talent in the 2011 draft was considered fairly flat after the first 2 picks, and players like Tristan, Klay, and Kawhi were all players expected to go in the 8-15 range at one point. There's no reason to exclude those other guys, just because the Cavs decided to snatch Tristan out of the pile.

At the point we decided to take Waiters, we had no clue that we'd be able to snag Tyler at #17.

In theory we could have traded up for Evan Fournier, or John Jenkins; or stayed put and taken Jeff Taylor ... or just not worried about it and focused on BPA. After all, the benefit of drafting Dion all depends on him actually becoming better than someone we could sign for league average salary. For instance, OJ Mayo is only getting $4M from the Mavs this season while Dion is getting paid nearly the same.
