New Amick 1st round mock:

4 SF
Michael-Kidd Gilchrist
Kentucky
Fr. 6-8 233
I've had Barnes here to this point, but the signs are conflicting enough that I'm switching to Kidd-Gilchrist. If the Cavs hold on to their pick, they could opt for the tough, defensive-minded wing player who is known as a coach's dream. Kidd-Gilchrist's jump shot needs work, but his motor, leadership and slashing ability are all part of what's seen as a winning package. We'll see if this latest buzz about Kidd-Gilchrist's being in the lead here holds up, as it's very different from what I was hearing at the beginning of this process, when Barnes was believed to be the target. It's also worth noting that Cleveland arranged a private workout for Washington shooting guard Terrence Ross for Wednesday. Ross is expected to be a late-lottery or mid-first-round pick, so this could be a sign that Cleveland is considering moving back. Given Houston's aggressive attempt to use its picks to get into the top 10 as part of its potential push for Howard, it makes you wonder if the Cavs might be considering swapping picks with the Rockets and possibly taking Ross in the teens.

Everyone rightfully focused on draft, but free agency begins Sunday. Expect #Cavs to pursue unrestricted free agent Jonny Flynn to be the backup point guard. Interest there on both sides.

With 28 hours to go, I don't think #Cavs are moving up to #2. I wouldn't completely rule out moving down yet, but think they're staying put.

Less than 36 hours until the NBA Draft and the rumors are swirling. Will Charlotte find a partner to trade with? Do the Kings have Michael Kidd-Gilchrist fall into their laps? Will Houston pull off the Dwight Howard deal or any deal for that matter?

With Charlotte essentially on the clock there is a sentiment from some polled around the league that the Bobcats are struggling to consummate a deal. While the reported talks between Cleveland and Charlotte have been the focus of speculation, the Cavs appear content to stay at 4 and draft Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Cleveland for their part have been hesitant to include an additional first round pick to slide up two spots when they should be able to select Kidd-Gilchrist (their preference) or Harrison Barnes. For Charlotte the inability to trade out of the second spot while not damning would be a blow to a franchise so void of talent that Rich Cho is looking to acquire additional draft picks.

A lot has been made about whether Sacramento will keep their pick or trade. According to a source, the Kings likeliest outcome is that they trade the fifth pick on draft night and try to add a player like John Henson. The Kings focus is on players that can contribute right away and help them win games.

After speaking to several executives around the league and they unanimously agreed that the Houston Rockets are the key to the NBA Draft. With three picks from 14-18 the Rockets are expected to be aggressive in trying to acquire Dwight Howard. If Howard cannot be obtained by Daryl Morey then its likely the Rockets will explore trading for Rudy Gay.

One name that bears watching on draft night is Miles Plumlee. The Duke center, who averaged modest stats during his career, has wowed many teams with his interviews and workouts. One source says that Plumlees athleticism and length are hard to find and that it would not be a surprise to see Plumlee crack the first round.

"There are so many teams looking to make a trade," said one league source. "Nobody knows what's going to happen."

Syracuse's Dion Waiters could be in play at No. 4 to Cleveland, according to those close to Waiters. That would shake up lottery a bit.

The Cavs have a problem. If they are right and the rest of the league is wrong, it could be a fairly significant problem. How they navigate tonight’s NBA Draft will go a long way in determining how successful they are in clearing out the debris and retooling another championship-caliber roster.

While draft analysts and league executives continue to rave about the depth and talent available tonight, the Cavs’ collective reaction to this draft pool has registered little more than a yawn and belly scratch.

There’s no Kyrie in this draft,” one team official said, referring to the Cavs’ reigning Rookie of the Year. Irving could soon be one of the three best point guards in what is quickly becoming a point guard-driven league. That counts for something.

And while Anthony Davis should be spectacular, he is the only potential superstar the Cavaliers see in this draft. That’s why it would be a bit surprising to see them trade with the Charlotte Bobcats to move up to No. 2.

If the price is their second pick in the first round, No. 24 overall, the Cavs don’t seem to think it’s worth it because there isn’t another player (aside from Davis) whom they are absolutely in love with and feel they can’t live without.

From all accounts, the Cavs will be happy to sit at No. 4 and wait to see who falls to them. It will most likely be Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who should be wearing a Cavs jersey by the end of the night.

Kidd-Gilchrist provides everything the Cavs need, except he struggles shooting the ball. He is a spectacular athlete who can defend three positions, he was a high school teammate of Irving’s and he has an incredible competitive streak.

If he is selected, the Cavs are counting on coach Byron Scott working with him and fixing the hitch in his shooting mechanics. Kidd-Gilchrist is the youngest player in the draft and has shown an eagerness to learn and work.

It’s that type of work ethic that sold the Cavs on Tristan Thompson with the fourth pick in last year’s draft. Thompson may never be an NBA superstar, but Cavs executives firmly believed he wouldn’t flop. That’s why he ultimately was the choice at No. 4 last year — to the surprise of nearly everyone else in the league.

Which brings us to tonight’s potential shocker. There is a chance, regardless of how small, that the Cavs could stun the NBA world again with a choice at No. 4 no one saw coming.

Like Syracuse shooting guard Dion Waiters.

At 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, Waiters has a thick physique. He excels at getting into the lane and getting to the basket, and Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has compared his style of play to Dwyane Wade.

One scout outside the Cavs said Waiters might be the best pure scorer in this draft, and scoring remains this team’s biggest need. With Antawn Jamison gone, they must find someone to take some of the scoring burden off Irving. That just might be Waiters.

It sounds ridiculous now, particularly since he didn’t even start at Syracuse, but the Cavs have been high on Waiters and have had him under consideration all along for the fourth pick.

General Manager Chris Grant has shown he isn’t afraid to take a chance on a guy higher than he is projected to go. Just look back to Thompson last year and, prior to that, Grant’s time in Atlanta, when he was part of the regime that selected Marvin Williams.

Grant has shown a flair for pulling draft night surprises and another one tonight would be yet another step down the path of the Oklahoma City model. The Thunder, then the Seattle SuperSonics, selected ultra athletic point guard Russell Westbrook out of UCLA with the, ahem, fourth overall pick in 2008.

No one saw it coming, and team officials were hammered for it by draft analysts. ESPN’s Dick Vitale was one of them, hollering how the pick didn’t make sense.

“Seattle will look back on this and realized they made a big, big mistake,” Vitale howled.

Turns out, the Sonics/Thunder knew exactly what they were doing.

In this world of instant gratification, we want to know right away if the Cavs make good or bad picks tonight. Truth is, whether it’s Kidd-Gilchrist, Waiters or someone else, no one will have any idea tomorrow if they did right or wrong. We won’t know that for a few years.

That brings us back to the initial point — the Cavs don’t view this draft like everyone else. There is one lock for stardom, and he is headed to New Orleans. If the Cavs are right and this draft ultimately isn’t as deep and talented as perceived, it means they will have held three picks within the top five over two seasons of lousy drafts. It doesn’t exactly bode well for a high success rate.

The clock in fans’ heads has naturally sped up now that LeBron James has won his championship. Dan Gilbert’s guarantee of beating James to a championship has been buried somewhere on South Beach, and now Cavs fans are expecting the playoffs.

The front office doesn’t agree. Another year in the lottery is expected, another high draft pick is needed — particularly if there isn’t a superstar available at No. 4 this year.

This rebuild is a long, painful process that has been complicated by varying views on the talent level of the past two drafts. But there is no fast forward button on this construction site.

As Gilbert and James can both agree, there are no shortcuts to a title. None.

Syracuse's Dion Waiters drawing interest from Cavaliers at No. 4 in NBA draft

NEW YORK – The Cleveland Cavaliers' intrigue with selecting Syracuse guard Dion Waiters with the fourth overall pick in Thursday’s NBA draft has gathered significant momentum, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Cavaliers haven’t been able to get Waiters to visit Cleveland for a workout and meeting with officials, but it hasn’t extinguished management’s ever-evolving fascination with choosing Waiters at No. 4 – especially if the Cavaliers are unable to secure Florida guard Bradley Beal.

Cleveland has intensified its background checks on Waiters, and sources in direct contact with Cavs officials believe Waiters would be the franchise's choice over Kansas’ Thomas Robinson should the Charlotte Bobcats select Michael Kidd-Gilchrist at No. 2, and the Washington Wizards take Beal at No. 3.

Because Waiters, a 6-foot-5 combo guard, had a promise later in the lottery, he stopped making visits to teams highest in the lottery. Nevertheless, Cleveland still believes it has strong intelligence on Waiters, an explosive scoring guard the Cavs can pair with Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving. Cleveland still has a strong desire to move to No. 2 to get Beal, but has resisted Charlotte’s attempts to attach Tyrus Thomas to a trade. Thomas has three years and $26 million left on his contract and has become unproductive and largely uncaring as a pro

As one league source connected to the talks said, "The rest of the deal would have to be very strong for [the Cavs] to take on [Thomas]."

The Toronto Raptors have stayed aggressive in their pursuit to move past the Golden State Warriors at No. 7 and secure Waiters, league sources said. Multiple league executives believe Toronto (No. 8) and Phoenix (No. 13) made it clear to Waiters’ agent they wouldn’t let him slide past them. At the start of the process, Waiters was projected to go in the Nos. 15-25 range. He has rapidly ascended into the top half of the lottery.

There’s a small pocket of Golden State management that’s a proponent of drafting UConn center Andre Drummond with the seventh pick, but several Warriors officials are less enthusiastic about him. Waiters has strong support among the Warriors' front office and coaching staff, along with North Carolina’s Harrison Barnes. Waiters' ability to attack the basket and get to the foul line is appealing for a Golden State team that ranked among the league’s worst in free-throw attempts.

Golden State has also shown a willingness to trade the No. 7 pick and move back in the first-round if none of the team's desired targets are available. The Warriors also own the 30th pick.

The @WojYahooNBA report on Dion Waiters screams smokescreen by Cavs to land Beal at 4 or have Charlotte lower its asking price for 2.

I think Beal is #Cavs top target, but #Bobcats want more than 4 and 24. If they end up with Kidd-Gilchrist or Barnes, still solid players.
