Farewell, Timofey Mozgov

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think this is false. I believe now we may use Haywood to get a 1st round pick by taking a bad contract back. This is exactly how the Cavs ended with Kyrie Irving, remember? Took on a crappy contract and got a lotto pick.

If we assume everyone is healthy, our backcourt should be pretty set going into next year. We'll have Love, TT, and Mozgov back. Possibly Andy as well, but that's too hard to predict. It'd be great if we could get into the 10-15 range and pick up a center to develop. We could potentially grab someone like Cauley-Stein in that range.

There actually aren't a lot of bad deals out there to be had (weird, I know). Two that I can see are Carl Landry who has 13 mil over 2 years left on his deal (maybe you can get them to throw in McLemore too?) and Kevin Martin who has 14 over 2 left.

Larry Sanders is probably the worst of the worst contracts (other than maybe Andy's new deal), and they might actually do that for straight up relief, but since we just got our center I don't see us doing that.

That last roster spot has to be for Dalembert (or O'Neil). We'll be ok at PG esp with Bron coming back who has been our main facilitator. JR Smith is also a very good passer. When everyone is healthy there should be no reason for our current backup PG Dellavedova to get more than 10 minutes a night. Hopefully Blatt now sees that Delly is better in small doses.

BTW, I checked Denver's stash of 2nd round picks. Like us they've dealt most of them away. They can deal their 2017 2nd round pick. They own a 2nd round pick in 2015 but it has strange protections and is the worse of the Bulls/Blazers 2nd round picks so it will be a very late 2nd rounder. They also own a Clippers 2015 2nd round pick but it also has strange protections and will likely not be conveyed at all.

a) Most people who are disappointed in the use of the draft picks in trades (going back to the cap room trades pre-LBJ) weren't expecting to use them, they were expecting them to have more value as tradeble assets down the road both this season and beyond.

b) Price was waived today because contracts become guarenteed, it doesn't necessarily mean a signing is imminent, it just takes some dollars off their books from a luxury tax perspective.

Nice overall roster makeover. I have been hoping to get Mozgov since the summer. Strong defender that us a big help when someone has broken the perimeter and is driving. The ESPN Stats tweet is so silly. Mozgov is more than just a defender against post-ups. The Cavs have been extremely vulnerable on drives. Shumpert is now there in an attempt to seal up the leaks on the perimeter while Mozgov is there for when someone gets through. He's a good rebounder, good shot blocker, and is excellent on his defensive rotations. He's a big who can shoot and is not a liability at the charity stripe.

Best bit is the only asset the Cavs gave up that was their own was Waiters. Those first rounders belonged to them, but are not their own. They can use their late first rounder this year to grab more rim protection (usually that can be found late, but well rounded guys less so). They didn't even have the OKC pick long enough for it to really count. And who knows when that Memphis pick will come. Maybe 2016 if the Griz don't keep Gasol, but if they keep him it will come in 2017 and probably be in the 20s. If that OKC pick comes this year, it'll be around 20. That's why Denver wanted two. Late firsts are crap shoots. All firsts really are.

Cavs getting a 2nd rounder back.

Timofy Mozgov, huh? I'm just shaking my head right now. Cavs are officially set for the future, i guess.

In the Center thread, I wrote that Mozgov is a tier three center. Even factoring that in, I don't think this is an overpay. It's a just-about-right pay.

IF the Cavs ever get both first rounders, the chances that both would pan out and contribute aren't high. At least Mozgov has proven he can play in the NBA. AND fits in Blatt's system. AND can hit the ground running.

Bron's body clock is ticking. And so is Love's contract clock. Might as well try.

Further, while it's true that Mozgov isn't a great or even very good center, he's not as bad as some are making out, including that stupid ESPN Stats tweet.

For what this team needed defensively, one key number for him is opponents Field Goal percentage at the Rim. This year, he's clocking in at 48.6%. (Source.)

That puts him in the same clump as players like Brook Lopez, Marcin Gortat, and DeAndre Jordan. And puts him ahead of Brandan Wright, Valenciunas, Drummond, Henson, and Asik.

Is that really so bad for two heavily protected first rounders that may or may not convey or develop?

Great post. We dont need a C to average 20 ppg on this team. Rebound well, bang down low, protect the rim and use fouls properly and he's well worth the risk.

Cavs getting a 2nd rounder back.

I think that's the Clippers' second rounder because the Nuggets' 2nd rounder goes to Houston or Minnesota. Might be able to find a stasher of some kind. I'm pretty happy with Joe Harris thus far and like his future potential. So Griffin may be able to do something with it.

The other thing to consider is that if there is a mid to late first rounder player in this years draft and probably more so next years draft we could probably buy a pick. Teams are trying to save up money for 2016 free agency and some won't want the guaranteed contract at the time. It would probably be useful to have some more seconds to include with cash but maybe we can use some rights to the guys that we have that no longer play basketball.

This almost feels like a reset on the season and that we are now back in training camp.

We added 3 guys who will all be the rotation once they are all healthy.

One of our key players is gone.

We are going to need time to gel. This team might not be able to grab a high seed but if they gel, it won't really matter.

Health and chemistry are the main goals now.

True, but Griff got this stuff done WAY before the trade deadline... giving the Cavs, what, a month more for the new guys to blend?

All good, and the plan is definitely to use the regular season to gel to get ready for the playoffs. Rest LeBron, keep Kyrie and Love healthy, get all the pieces working to together, get a rotation set, Blatt is no longer a rookie coach, etc.

i dont think we can consider this problem solved until we restock the back ups. Dalembert is a good idea, and i think Jermain O'Niel would not be extravagent.
