We had to do it to clear space for LeBron. If we didn't have LeBron out there saying he wanted the max then maybe we could have had some leverage to keep one of those guys, but at the end of the day you take LeBron over Zeller and Karasev 10 times out of 10. Stop whining.
We could have used the stretch provision on Jack and made some other moves (dump our 2nd round picks) and not dump quality assets in the process.
To further clarify: The 2011 CBA dramatically changes this regimen. While contracts signed under the 2005 CBA remain under the original scheme, different rules apply to new contracts. When a team waives a player signed under the 2011 CBA, it can spread the remaining guaranteed salary (and its accompanying cap hit) over twice the remaining length of the contract, plus one year.
Jack had 2 years guaranteed at $6.3 million each and a 3rd year with $500k guaranteed. That would have allowed the Cavs to stretch his $12.8 million guaranteed salary over a period of 7 years. $12.8 million/7 years = $1.83 million/year.
