Down goes Team USA.

Man, other than Ant, I don't know if anyone from this team should make it to the Olympic roster. Maybe Jaren Jackson Jr for the defense, but other than that this roster is pretty weak.
JJJ was probably the biggest problem on the team. If I'm in charge of US basketball, I don't let him anywhere near my program again.

It's Edwards and him alone who would make an Olpymic team.

Ant wasn’t great either honestly, have absolutely no effort on defense and cares more about scoring 30 then winning

If I could have any 10 American players...

Guards: Lillard, Curry, Haliburton
Wings: Butler, Leonard, Durant, LeBron, Tatum
Bigs: Davis, Adebayo

Insert Mitchell, Brown & Mobley or Holmgren in some capacity. You'll then sneak the best prep/recently drafted player in the country. My guess is it'll be Cooper Flagg.

However I think you'll see someone like Embiid or KAT who have international ties turn to our national team.

It’s starting to feel like you legit might not be able to make the best team in the world using only US players. Can’t remember ever feeling that way.

The problem USA has is a deeply flawed understanding of how FIBA basketball works. Because TEAM USA will never have the time and dedication to implement a full system for offense and defense their only path to victory is having a huge talent and athleticism advantage. Unfortunately that gap is decreasing rapidly.

I guess they thought role players might help but then They went and picked either guys with no offense or guys who don't play D. You can't do that in international play. Everyone needs to be able to play both sides.

It was striking to me how even obscure foreign teams now often seem to have multiple NBA players. Testimony to internationalization of the game. You combine some NBA experience with a small country that can invest deeply in continuity and teamwork for its national team and you get what we’re seeing.

This really isn't shocking at all given how much basketball has gone global.

I'm assuming you mean all the best players from non U.S. countries.

No individual country can compete with the U.S. if we're using our best players.

Edit: spelling

American players individually are still a tier above athletically/skillwise against their world counterparts. The celebration of "self" propels kids to be the best in sports. Problem with this is that american kids never really get to develop skills that foster team work. While it's always nice to see high flyers and ankle breakers, it's not always good basketball. The world is creeping up with skill and have played more organized basketball than aau. If the US wants to maintain it's dominance in basketball, it should start at the grassroots levels.

No I mean that the US might not be able to field the best national team among other national teams, even if all our best guys agreed to play for the summer.

I would argue that it’s already the case that an all-Eastern Europe team could beat an all-US team — even though Eastern Europe and the US are comparable in population (US actually about 20% larger).

Hard disagree on the first point.

Mild disagree on the second.

It would have to be a year where everything comes together perfectly talent-wise for any nation to challenge the best U.S. players. The closest we've seen is Spain and they had an insanely stacked team in 08 vs the redeem team.

But still the redeem team crushed them in group play and then there was a close game in the finals.

Look at what KD and even Kyrie did by themselves against international comp.

Now add Steph, Bron, Tatum, DM, Booker, Butler, Lillard, AD, Bam, JB to name some.

Then you have specialty/Hustle players like Green, Bridges, Mobley

You'd have to assemble the best non U.S. players in the world to compete.
