First Round Pick

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Missed time with blisters...

lol....

I don't know much at all about the MLB draft, I doubt most people on here do. But does anyone know if there are a lot of players drafted in the 1st round that are supposed to end up being bullpen pitchers?

I honestly have no idea, I am just wondering. I would think the 1st round would have more guys that have potential to end up being big time hitters or starters being taken. Just my guess?

Here's his scouting report from ESPN.

Summary: White, one of the younger college pitchers in this class, sat 88-92 mph in a mid-May look against Boston College, although he more typically sits 91-93 and will run it up to 95, with good tailing life on the pitch. The biggest knock on White is that he throws a ton of off-speed pitches instead of pitching off his fastball, and that's going to be the first adjustment a player development department asks him to make. His slider can be plus at times; it's long and sharp and usually ends up out of the strike zone, so college hitters will chase it but pro hitters might not -- a problem that Andrew Miller, another UNC product, found when he got into pro ball. White also shows a splitter or split-change that has a chance to be plus. His delivery is funky and unclean, with a high elbow in back, a long path for his arm and more drift than drive toward the plate. He's an intelligent kid with some feel for pitching, and probably has a better-than-average chance to improve with instruction. He does have an outstanding track record, including a heroic showing in Omaha in 2008, but I see him as more of a mid-first-round talent than a top-of-draft guy.

Doesnt sound like anything special. Another soft tosser.

:D

Actually, he's a power arm.

Touches 95 but mainly stays in the 91-92 range.

No doubt you would have been completely disgusted with anyone this team would have picked, but don't be foolish. This guy has three plus pitches, and was a great value where we were picking.

I was actually just going off the scouting report. But I'm sure you know more than they do so I'll trust you.

The scouting report says he touches 95 and stays 91-93...

White's electric arm throws a lively, moving low-to-mid 90s fastball from a 3/4 arm slot that can top out at 96 or 97 mph.

“He has a plus fastball up to 96 MPH with heavy life. He features two different secondary pitches, a split which is a late swing-and-miss type pitch and a slider that is a swing-and–miss type pitch as well. He has very good size at 6’2” 235 pounds. He has been one of our targets since the beginning of the season and he was the top talent left up on the board at that point in time. He was a guy who once he pitched his senior year in high school he had the power stuff we liked with a power sinker, power fastball, and power slider, and he is just a very athletic, intelligent kid. He was a guy that we have known since high school, and our area scout Bob Mayer has known him since high school. He is a guy we had interest in when he was in high school but were unable to draft him, but watched him for the last three years in North Carolina. He is an intelligent kid who is very grounded and very strong in his values. He has added a split to his repertoire now, as in high school he was a power sinker-slider guy. We are going to likely project him out as a power backend bullpen arm. He is a plus-plus makeup guy. Our development path with the innings he has right now at North Carolina, we will probably slow-play it once we do get him signed, but we will begin the transition to the bullpen probably next year. We took him with the intention of signing him.”

- Indians Scouting Director Bud Grand

White was electric for the Tar Heels out of the bullpen in the 2008 College World Series, sitting at 96 mph with excellent life on his fastball, and some scouts see him in that role.

"This pick fell right into there laps. He could have gone as high as 7 but the Sanchez pick and all the prep arms pushed him back. Great value pick, was projected as a top 5 earlier this year."

- Keith Law

But hey, he's a soft tosser...

So you counter an espn scouting report with another espn scouting report?

And topping out at 96 is different from throwing 96 regularly.

and will run it up to 95

And throwing 91-93 is not a soft-tosser.

Again, it didn't matter who we took...you would have found a reason to complain.

Low 90s isn't soft tossing? I could be mistaken but that's about where 99% of our pitching staff sits, and we have one of the softest tossing pitching staffs in the league.

By the way, couldnt I say you'd "love" anybody they picked, Eternal Optimist?

A couple years ago, i was listening to the draft on mlb.com. They were upwards in the 40th round. It sounded like it was a slave draft. The announcer had such a monotone voice.

You could, but you'd be wrong.

I hated the Chisenhall pick last year and not much has changed. Alex White fell into our laps, and instead of passing on talent for signability (the core problem with this team's drafting over the last ten years), they drafted him and have every intention of signing him.

He is not a soft-tosser. Pretty much every scout, analyst and common man has agreed upon as much....how you're still defending outright stupidity I'll never know, but it's time to let it go.

Also, pretty much every "scouting report" says the Indians did well with their first round pick.

But to use your own words, "I'm sure you know more than them."
