Forecasting A Potential Head Coaching Search

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'd give Terry Stotts a look, too.

Bud and Stotts for re-tread hires.

Chris Quinn for a 1st time hire.

I want young-ish, and NBA coaching exposure. I say no to any hot college coach with zero NBA coaching on the resume.

I think Dave Adelman is my pick...he's the right age, good pedigree, comes from a championship program. A lot of positive hype about him.

My 2nd choice is David Vanterpool. Decent asst coaching resume, a ton of eclectic playing experience. Maybe him, maybe not, but a lot of fringe players make the best coaches because they don't have top tier abilities, so they have to learn and adjust. They know what work needs to be put into achieving. Early 50s, almost got a shot with Minnesota. I think he deserves a shot.

My 3rd choice, I suppose he has an out from BYU if the right offer comes, Kevin Young. Right age, a lot of NBA and G league coaching experience. Has worked with some good HCs.

I am not really one to overthink these things. Whispers flew around that JBB was on the hot seat way back in the first month of the regular season. I put Coach Bud out there for three reasons:

1. We know he can see a team all the way to a championship, winning it all with Milwaukee. He also has the distinction of winning NBA Coach of the Year in the first year taking over a program twice: His first year with Atlanta and then again in his first year with Milwaukee. He makes an immediate impact.

2. His teams also got much worse as soon as he left. Atlanta only fired Coach Bud because they wanted to tear down the Millsap/Korver/Teague core. They dropped out of the playoff race immediately. After Milwaukee let him go for a supposed upgrade in Griffin, their team fell of to the middle of the pack despite having a star player.

3. He's not the type of coach who seeks a destination big city. He grew up in a small town in Arizona and was willing to take the Milwaukee job. I guess I still have a bad taste in my mouth from Ty Lue shrugging off the job once LBJ left. Give me someone who will embrace the city, one sauerbraten with cabbage roll at a time.

Bud would be a great coach if you want someone else who will refuse to make any adjustments and cares more about his own system than the players he has in it.

I want Chris Quinn. Went to HS in Ohio. Played for the Cavs. Played under Pat Riley for 2 seasons. Played under Spo for 2 seasons. Coached under Spo for past 10 seasons. He's been around the right people and played PG in the NBA. And I think he would have enough NBA connections to build a good staff.

I guess another consideration is, is there a candidate that Donovan might get excited to stay/play for?
And secondary, same for Mobley? Some connection that might best work with/unlock him?

I don't follow coaches enough to know who is out there, but 3 of what will likely be the final 4 teams standing are being coached by guys in their first stint - Boston, OKC, Minny.

Didn't we have Dave Joerger around for a while? I guess he went to the Bucks when Doc was hired mid season.
