Game 28 | Atlanta @ Cleveland | Thursday December 26, 2013 7:00 PM EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Im just going to bury my head in the sand and pretend that there is no such problem as floor spacing.

I'll look at box scores and pretend that when I see 9/13 for Tristan, they are coming from 15 feet out and he is not getting blocked at the rim even when guys are rotating and recovering on him after leaving him open and guards are dropping off passes as a result of meeting 2 defenders (Im going to pretend Dion didnt set him up picture perfectly and that Tristan finished that play instead of getting blocked cleanly by 6'6 Paul Millsap, getting bailed out by the refs and then missing both free throws)

You can kill Kyrie for forcing things, he DID in fact force things, but then you also have to kill Dion for forcing things the same way with the same lineup in, while he was playing the role of Kyrie. Next to Jack, Delladova, Tristan and Andy, Dion had 3 straight plays of unforced turnovers because the entire defense was able to sag and rotate off Andy and Tristan and force the ball handler to overthink trying to adjust to what he saw in front of him.

The floor is shrunk, in an age where floor spacing is the key to success.

Soon as we make moves to space the floor better with one of our bigs being a consistent threat from 15 feet and out, we will look like we have turned a corner.

It's as simple as that last sentence.

With so much time and effort put into Bynum I'm not sure how Tristan gets a chance to develop into being that person (out of the bigs on the roster I think he has the most potential).

I won't lie Rich, I have quietly disagreed with you on this issue since the start of the season......

You have finally converted me. I can't think of a contender in this league that doesn't have a front court player who can space the floor from 15ft.

Start Bennett and let TT come off the bench as a super sub high energy defender/garbage man. He'd excel as a more athletic/higher ceiling AV type, and I've been saying he since he's been drafted.

Let's put these players in their best suited roles.

Larmarcus Aldridge, Dirk Nowitski, Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, David West, Zach randolph, Boozer, Duncan are power forwards that can shoot from 15 to 19 feet. thats 8 starting power forwards out of 30

meanwhile Thompson is 10th in attempts from 10-14 feet amongst forwards at 44% just as effective as paul milsap. with a better percentage than boozer, durant, anthony, david west, zach randolph, david lee and thaddeus young etc.

not bad for a guy who many lamented would never have any range.

Thompson is 4th amongst power forward in attempts from 5-9 feet. 44.7 percent. Thompson is 15th in attempts from within 5 feet. shooting 49% which is lousy. he needs to get that up another 10-15 % but with the rate he is improving he can certainly get there. last season Thompson was 8th in attempts from within 5 feet but shot 55%. if anyone is impacted by spacing its Thompson with bynums lane clogging.

last year Thompson was 1st in fga from 5-9 feet with a modest 40% shooting. still better percentage than Duncan, Blake Griffin paul milsap and boozer

10-14 16th in attempts 37%
15-19 62nd in attempts 36% amongst forwards.

this is definitive improvement and an all around game within 15 feet. not to mention he is showing the ability to drive from the top of the key.

one things for sure is Thompson doesnt clutter the lanes and he has an all around game that will serve him and his team well

Thompson hits 44% from 10-14 feet while not being guarded. The other guys you mentioned have to be guarded. Not to mention a 10-14 foot jumper isn't even out of the paint, so I don't know what the threat of him making 44% of those has to do with floor spacing.

Someone let me know when we actually get a floor spacing big man.

post game Irving Waiters chemistry report.

Hawks vs Cavs.

Lineup
Irving + Dion = 28 minutes 57 possessions. PTS OFF 68 DEF 67 Assist % 35.7 Net +1
Irving no Dion= 16 minutes 31 possesions. PTS OFF 29 DEF 42 Assist % 45.5 Net -13
Dion no Irving= 13 minutes 25 possesions PTS OFF 28 DEF 18 Assist % 70 Net +10

To lazy to do the net points by minute or per possesion but if you wanna see them.. just do your own damn math!

so either there is no spacing around the paint meaning Thompson is taking contested shots or there is spacing on the floor allowing Thompson to get wide open shots which he doesnt take because he is timmid... Im confused the Thompson critcisms are seeming inherently contradictive .

Thompson had little to no game from 10 to 14 feet last season. now he does. It is quite respectable for s a starting forward. hence the examples.

he is also adding the 15-19 range jump shots. last season 62nd in attempts this season 32nd at 40%.

btw the paint is a rectangle.

name me some big men in their third year or less shooting from more efficient from 5 to 20 feet. Ill be glad to due a comparison. better yet lets go 5 years. and for giigle give me those up to 5th year pf starters or even centers for that matter outside of Blake Griffin
