Game 5| Bobcats @ Cavs Jan. 3rd 7 pm EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Dunno how good the team is, but they are doing what scott says and they are winning. You couldn't wish for a better start for the young guys. Do what the coach says and you will improve.

The only way to compete with the caa super teams is not to trade away players like varejao.

I might be stating the obvious but I've really been impressed with what this team is doing. Scott has been doing a great job IMO. Him being disciplined and staying with his rotations is such a refreshing sight. The substitutions, the minutes he distributes all play into a bigger thing. He's keeping all his players fresh in this shortened but game-riddled season, he is showcasing his players (mostly the rookies) but also gives ample chances to his vets - I really like watching Sessions out there, the kid has improved a lot, Jamison finally out of his funk and has strung 3 decent games. I think he really likes Casspi and will continue giving him more playing time, IMO Casspi's game took a huge hit during his last year in Sactown; At this point he might be dealing with the mental aspect of the game.

Going back to the minutes and rotations, I think that what Coach Scott is doing could also soften the blow of the rookie wall should Kyrie and/or TT hit it, as they would be getting used to producing quality basketball with the playing time handed to them (as stated above by IBWT, Kyrie already blows out the competition in limited minutes). We aren't depending heavily on them and I like it that way, not now or not yet at least.

Forgive me if I can't kill my excitement for next season though. A full summer of everyone working on filling up their needs, we will also finally be able to see the Princeton Offense back, remember that Scott didn't fully implement it this season cause he opted to use a simpler offensive scheme.

With all that said, I am truly going to enjoy what we have this season.

So above average role players aren't allowed to stay with their mid-market teams in fear of being to good to tank???

Lawd, the things I read on this board. You all actually believe the nonsense you write back and forth to each other. I know you all don't like the truth but you need to hear it:

85% of this board have no idea what they're talking about. This tanking faction on this board is pathetic.

Do you all see why we don't need A. Davis? TT will be an anchor down there. Last thing we need is a power forward.

I'm liking Perry Jones more and more this year, but according to you we didn't need a PG going into the last draft either.....

It's not about tanking; it's about being practical and maximizing the trade value of guys who will be past their prime when we're finally (hopefully) in position to contend. This is the state of the NBA. We couldn't land a top free agent when LeBron was here, and we're certainly not going to attract one now. Stockpile assets, let your youth develop, and preach defense. The '04 Pistons are the model; the Spurs are a winning lottery ticket.

That makes no sense.

Varejao is a valued contributor as a starter.. bench player or any other role you want to put him into. He gives you conssitency and a strong work ethic and will be a valued asset on the team when it gets to the playoffs.
and yes this team will need to make a couple playoff trips before it could ever be considered a "legitimate" contender no matter how far down the road it is.

Regardless of this season cavs will be a 5-8 seed next year and the season after. at some point todays starters will be tomorrows back up and regardless of age an anthony parker. ,gibson maybe even jamison varejao bench set well rested will not be something teams will want to see. thats the worst case scenario . you then have a good solid 5 year window to get the pieces you need to take the next steo

If we keep Andy, do we somehow lose the ability to still "stockpile" young players and "assets'??

And what does '04 Pistons model have to do with what the Cavs are trying to do?

Nothing.

Try trying re-create what other teams do/did. Form a vision of your own. That's what great GMs do.

Replay about to start on FSOhio if anyone missed it.

Once again could not watch the game, but some impressions from the play by play. Taking nothing away from Kyries performance, he just keeps getting better, but the real separation in the game came from sesssions and booby in the second half. 3 minute stretch there where sessions made a jumper and dished four dimes on a 14-2 run.

Also pretty clear that Gee is playing a lot better than Cassipi. Omri was making a lot of mistakes again. It is like his head is not in the game.

Thompson was an engine for the entire game, and he was moreso when Samardo was in the game. Hs one weakness is free throw shooting. If he figures that out, he will challenge Kyrie for the best in this draft.

Speaking of which, as bad as this draft was supposed to be, many of the top picks are doing pretty ok so far. Besides our guys, Kanter's has looked Ok and Byombo showed some offense last night which every one said he did not have. Kemba got blanked but in other games has looked good. But there are quite a few rookies getting minutes.

Man, this team is actually fun to watch this year, some observations:

The 2nd unit has been killing it out there. They were in at the beginning of the 4th and basically extended the lead then put the game away against the charlotte starting unit. Yeah, it was Charlotte's, but still. They're developing a cohesiveness and chemistry which will definitely serve well during this super-fast pace season.

Kyrie looks good, especially on offense. Doesnt turn the ball over, knows how to score, can distribute and handle the ball. One knock so far has been defense, but he looks like he has the quicks to hang with most anyone. Lets give him the year to get used to things going at NBA speed and with the NBA (accelerated) number of games. TT is like a young Andy out there. Will get you points around the basket, cant shoot for crap, provides hustle and 50:50 balls, and is going to be a defensive monster. The difference is hes a legit shot blocker, and though hes 6-9, hes got the ups and athleticism to effectively add a couple inches.

Could this team make the playoffs? Yeah. We havent played anyone "good" yet, this is true. The problem is there are less "good" teams. With the condensed season and no off season, the elite teams are going to run away from the pack, but the rest of the league is going to have more parity. Any team with high turnover during the offseason is going to be in about the same boat, and there isnt practice time to really make any headway. So if you have a deep team with the right attitude, you're going to be competitive in every game. I expect Miami, Chicago, Orlando (until Dwight is traded), Boston, New York, and Atlanta to be playoff teams, but that leaves two spots wide open and this team looks competitive enough to get one. Now it is early and I might have said the same last year, so yeah we could still he headed to lotto land, but I dont think we're looking at bottom 3 territory at all. Basically, hope this draft is as deep as everyone says it is.

Theres a debate about if AV belongs. Right now I'd say hes kind of the MVP of this team. Is he part of the teams long term plan? I have no idea. He could be though. His game relies on hustle; he's not incredibly athletic, he's not particularly fast or strong. As long as he stays in shape and healthy he can keep contributing the way he does for the next 5 years or so I would think. The key is not getting injured for him. Would he help a contender over the hump? Hell yeah. Would we get an equivalent piece with a late 1st rounder? Doubt it.
