Marchin' into the Madness.

Just as four college teams found out their hard worked had paid off on Sunday, tonight the Cleveland Cavaliers made their push for the NBA's number one seed. The Cavs trailed entering the final minute of the game, as LeBron James was the only player to score in the closing sixty seconds, leading Cleveland to their ninth win of the month. Here is how the team has danced their way to success in March:

- Record: 9-1.

- Cleveland: 100.6 points per game on 360-782 (46.0%) shooting, including 86-209 (41.1%) from three.

- Opponent: 95.7 points per game on 368-818 (45.0%) shooting, including 63-207 (30.4%) from three.

- 4th Quarter: Cavs - 27.1 points per fourth quarter, Opponent - 19.6 points per fourth quarter. The Cavaliers have now won 9 fourth quarters in the 10 games played in the month of March.

- Defesnse: Cavs - 8.5 steals and 4.3 blocks per game, Opponent - 7.0 steals and 4.2 blocks per game.

- LeBron James (10 games): 30.5 points, 8.7 assists, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 1.6 blocks on 98-203 (48.3%) shooting, including 84-109 (77.1%) from the free throw line.

- Mo Williams (10 games): 21.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists on 35-61 (57.4%) shooting from three point.

- Anderson Varejao (10 games): 9.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.3 steals on 39-66 (59.1%) shooting.

Believe it or not, while the Cavs have had great success in the month of March, only two of their nine wins have been by double-digits. By contrast, seven of the team's nine February wins were by 10 or more points. Regardless of how the games are being won, however, the Cavs are five wins shy of their most wins in a month this season with seven games remaining. Here are some more individual notables from this March:

- With 21.8 points per game this March, Mo Williams has his most points per game in a month this season. He's also averaging his most rebounds per game in a month (4.3) and his best three point shooting percentage in a month (57.4%).

- Similarly, Anderson Varejao is averaging his most rebounds per game in month this season with 7.9 per game. Also, his 13 steals so far this month are tied for most in a month this season with 7 games still remaining.

- Lastly, LeBron James is getting to the rim with absolute strength and determination this month. He is 84-109 (77.1%) from the stripe in March, averaging 8.4 made free throws per game. This marks a season high for made free throws per game in a month for James.

Oh, Oh, it's Magic.

The Orlando Magic have been known to give the Cavs absolute fits in seasons past. Coming into tonight, in fact, the Magic had won its last three games in Quicken Loans Arena. Here were some of the recent trends coming into tonight:

2007-08 Season:

- Record: 1-3.

- Cavaliers: 102.5 points per game on 152-338 (45.0%) shooting.

- Orlando: 108.3 points per game on 152-334 (45.5%) shooting, scoring over 100 points all four games.

- 4th Quarter: Cavs - 23.3 points per game, Magic - 28.8 points per game.

- LeBron James (4 games): 28.8 points, 9.8 assists, and 9.0 rebounds on 40-86 (46.5%) shooting.

- Dwight Howard (4 games): 19.5 points and 12.5 rebounds.

Last 3 Home Games vs. Orlando:

- Record: 0-3.

- Cavaliers: 93.7 points per game on 108-261 (41.4%) shooting.

- Orlando: 102.7 points per game on 113-229 (49.3%) shooting.

- LeBron James (3 games): 24.7 points, 9.3 assists, and 8.0 rebounds on 27-64 (42.2%) shooting, going 17-30 (56.7%) from the free throw line.

- Dwight Howard (3 games): 24.7 points and 11.0 rebounds.

This Season:

- Record: 0-1.

- Cavaliers: 88 points on 34-82 (41.5%) shooting, 13-20 (65.0%) from the free throw line.

- Orlando: 99 points on 36-80 (45.0%) shooting, 16-18 (88.9%) from the free throw line.

- 4th Quarter: Cavs - 16 points, Magic - 20 points.

- LeBron James (1 game): 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists on 10-27 (37.0%) shooting, including 0-2 from three and 3-6 (50%) from the free throw line.

- Dwight Howard (1 game): 22 points and 18 rebounds.

Tonight:

- Cavaliers Win.

- Cavaliers: 97 points on 39-84 (46.4%) shooting, 12-16 (75.0%) from the free throw line.

- Orlando: 93 points on 36-79 (45.6%) shooting, 11-13 (84.6%) from the free throw line.

- 4th Quarter: Cavs - 25 points, Magic - 18 points.

- LeBron James: 43 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists on 15-27 (55.6%) shooting, including 4-7 (57.1%) from three and 9-10 (90%) from the free throw line.

- Dwight Howard: 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Ultimately, the Cavs were able to reverse many of the unfortunate trends they had established earlier in games versus the Orlando Magic. They were able to shoot a better field goal percentage, outscore them in the fourth quarter (and the whole second half), and LeBron James erupted for 43 points on 55.6% shooting. Here are some individual notables from tonight's game:

- In his 20th game against Orlando, LeBron James scored his most points versus the Magic in game for his career (43 points). James also tied a career high versus the Magic with 15 made field goals tonight. LeBron was able to explode for this career night, despite the fact Dwight Howard made it his personal task to "derail the L-Train." :chuckles:

- Similarly, in his 11th game against the team that originally drafted him, Anderson Varejao scored double-digit points for the first time in his career versus Orlando (12 points). His 2 assists are also a career best versus the Magic, as are his six made field goals.

- Mo Williams' 9 made field goals are also his most field goals in a game versus Orlando, despite playing 15 games against the Magic coming into tonight. Williams was also 22-24 (91.7%) from the free throw line against the Magic prior to tonight's game, before missing a pair at the line for the first time this season.

Fire Up Front.

While the Cavs backcourt was unexpectedly outscored by Orlando's (on more efficient shooting, nonetheless), anyone that predicted that the Cleveland frontcourt of Anderson Varejao and Zydrunas Ilgauskas would nearly outscore all-stars Rashard Lewis and Dwight Howard would probably get hazed. Luckily, anyone bold enough to make that prediction was rewarded with bold play from the 4-5 combo tonight. Here is a closer look at tonight's match-up:

- Anderson Varejao + Zydrunas Ilgauskas: 20 points and 18 rebounds on 9-20 (45%) shooting, including 2-2 (100%) from the line.

- Rashard Lewis + Dwight Howard: 22 points and 19 rebounds on 8-23 (34.8%) shooting, including 0-8 from three and 3-5 (60%) from the line.

Over the last five games (record: 5-0), Varejao and Ilgauskas have been very solid, rebounding the ball well and shooting it at a high percentage. Here is a closer look:

- Varejao + Ilgauskas (5 games): 22.8 points, 17.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks on 47-92 (51.1%) shooting.

Even more impressive, the Cavaliers entire starting frontcourt, composed of LeBron, Anderson, and Zydrunas, has responded well to the loss of Ben Wallace. Over those last five games in particular, they have rebounded exceptionally well. Here's a better look:

- LeBron James (5 games): 9.4 rebounds per game (6.8 defensive rebounds per game).

- Anderson Varejao (5 gms): 9.4 rebounds per game (6.4 defensive rebounds per game).

- Zydrunas Ilgauskas (5 gms): 7.6 rebounds per game (4.8 defensive rebounds per game).

Overall the trio has combined for 26.4 rebounds per game over the last five, including 18.0 defensive rebounds per game. Furthermore, the same trio is averaging 58.2 points per game over the last five games, 3.3 more points per game than Boston's "big three" is averaging on the season.

View from the other side:

- Rashard Lewis scored his fewest points in a game against the Cavaliers, 6, since he faced them as a member of the Sonics back in 2005. He only played 2 minutes in that game, however, as his 6 points tonight is his fewest against Cleveland in the 18 career games he has played at least 23 minutes.

- Tonight Rafer Alston recorded Magic-highs on the season for points, steals, field goals made, and three point field goals made against a familiar foe. Alston now has three straight 20 point games against Cleveland, shooting 13-24 (54.2%) from three in those three games.

I have a little stat

Courtney Lee....Lebron has chased him down 3 different times on fast breaks and has yet to block his shot. He had two chances tonight and just missed him both times....Lee is on my wanted list:mad:

I'll take one.

Great game.. Wasn't a fan of Lebron pulling up on that three ball but heck it won't in so it's all good. But the last possession with him getting his defender off balance and committing the foul was great. Not to long ago I don't see him doing that because of his foul shot shooting but he took the foul and knocked down the 2 FT with confidence which was great to see.

Cavs are now a game ahead of even the Lakers :)
