The Beasts of the East Begin to Stir
The Cavaliers are stringing together some impressive wins to end the regular season. Whether it be against Toronto twice, Godwiddie (and Brooklyn), Denver, Milwaukee, and the recent come from behind win against the Wiz kids, have been pulling off some good Ws. Pulling off tonight’s win against Philly on the 2nd night of a back-to-back on the road would really be something. However, I believe losing this game for the Cavs won’t mean as much as winning would for Philly. Cleveland (specifically LeBron) has been there and done that in all kinds of situations. This game does have the 3rd seed of the East at stake.
Rotate and Confuse
Despite putting together a string of wins, it hasn’t always been pretty. The rotation’s one consistency has been to remain inconsistent. In the last 13 games, no 5-man group for the Cavs has played more than 25 minutes together. There’s been 147 different combinations (around 40-50 with only a minute or less played). The hope is that the coaching staff will settle onto a rotation going into the playoffs. The fear is that the unit they use might not have enough reps together. The Cavaliers do have room for adjustments though, as they have enough depth for new guys to completely replace others in the rotation should the matchup demand.
The King’s Reign of Excellence
Mere numbers don’t do justice to the dominance of LeBron James. His fingerprints are all over these wins. The scary part? He has another level. He still hasn’t put forth much effort into defense. That switch will be pushed in good time. Bow to the King and witness greatness.
Creed of the Schedule Makers
Philly has beaten the Nuggets, Timberwolves, and eliminated Detroit from the playoffs in their last 16 games played. Those three are about it, though. Their schedule has been pretty weak lately. However, you play who’s in front of you, and they’re taking care of business. The 76ers are winners of 12 in a row and have won almost all of those games by 10+ points.
Club Minus Joel
Embiid has missed the last five games and shouldn’t be back until the Playoffs begin after a collision with Fultz fractured his eye. Philly has continued to win, however, they haven’t been tested in any of those games (except for the Detroit one). They’ve beaten the Knicks, Hawks, Hornets, Nets, and Pistons. Guys are stepping up. JJ Reddick and Illyasova are at the top of two-man groups that Philly has been running in Embiid’s absence. Marco Belinelli has also been stepping up. In the last 5 games, he’s the 2nd leading scorer on the 76ers averaging 16.6 points per game on 57 percent from the floor and 42 percent from three. JJ Reddick is first in scoring for them, averaging over 20 points per game on 48 percent shooting from three. Dario Saric is third in scoring, at 16 point a game, but he’s only shooting 37% from the floor but he too has missed the last several games.
Eye of the Rookie, a Thrill a Night
Ben Simmons is pretty damn good as a rookie and if he ever hit a rookie wall this year he’s well over it. In his last 10 games, he’s averaging a triple-double (12.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, 10.7 assists, only 2.4 turnovers, 1.6 steals, 0.7 blocks) on an absurd 61 percent shooting. His glaring weakness has been free throw shooting and to a lesser extent, shot-taking. He’s only shooting 50 percent from the line and has attempted less than 10 shots a game (9.4) during this 10-game stretch. His defense is rock-solid. Ben Simmons is going to be good for a long, long time.
