Game Thread | Game #61 | Cavs @ Sixers | Feb. 15, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’ll take 23 points and 9 boards with a wet leg seven days a week.
While blowing point blank clutch shots? Not me. But he wasn't alone, lots of blown opportunities by lots of Cavs.

If Rubio and Osman could have played (especially Rubio) probably would have won this one.

Yeah I think Rubio could have helped them on the court mentally in the first half. Definitely missed his leadership and presence on the court.

Not going to hang my head on that one. Sixers came out swinging and felt like we were waiting for them to cool off instead of giving them a punch of our own. Missing open shots will do that to you. Glad to see we came back, made a game of it, and reminded ourselves that we can compete with this team.

Nice comeback from being down 28 (I scribbled "men against boys" at that point) to being down by 4 points and a legitimate chance to steal a win.

That wasn't going to happen with Embiid on the floor as he scored 8 points in a row. The refs let him get away with pushing Allen with his off arm as much as he wanted. The ESPN announcer said Allen needs to hit the floor to get the foul and he finally did with a couple of minutes to go and still didn't get the call.

The Sixers started 7-for-8 on 3's and were 3-for-19 the rest of the way. The Cavs were 4-for-17 at halftime on 3's and went 6-for-13 in the second half. It's all about the 3-ball.

The announcers made a point that the Cavs forwards don't shoot well enough. Yep, that is our Achilles heel. Mobley, Okoro, Wade, Green, Stevens, and LeVert combined to go 3-for-16 on 3's. Just 5-for-16 would have meant a tie game in regulation.

Whoever we play in the playoffs will take note and pack the paint, inviting Mobley, Okoro, and Wade to shoot 3's all day.

Loved the way Mitchell battled in the second half after struggling the first half. He had 25 points in the second half and along with Garland almost pulled it off. Garland had 27 points on just 14 shots. He's been amazing this month.

Allen was pretty much destroyed by Embiid, who had a line of 29/14/5 to 12/7/4 for Allen. I love Allen but I wish folks would not refer to him as an All-Star just because he was an injury replacement last year. Put Allen on the floor with Embiid and it's obvious who is the All-Star and who is not.

The next game is in Cleveland and hopefully we'll have Rubio back. Danny Green will have had a few more games to settle in by then, too.

In the end it took the Cavs too long to get going. They were down 25 at the half and 28 in the 3rd before they starting clawing back.

Eh, I think that's a poor take from the game.

Embiid really had to work for all of those points. Allen's performance was fine. He's obviously not as good as Embiid but he isn't supposed to be.

Allen is an all-star level center. Embiid is a generational star center.

1.Cavs lost the game in the 1st quarter. Cavs played tentative in the beginning.
2.Garland was effective tonight. That DG-Allen pnr is deadly because embiid wont challenge DG that far out and he is not fast enough to recover. Need to put embiid in as much pnr action as possible.
3.Rather see embiid bully ball his way to the basket than give up open 3s. Cavs overhelp on embiid post ups so much that they capitalized with a 6/6 3pt shooting the 1st 10 mins.
4.Harden should not be able to rest on defense. Okoro stayed on the corners all game. He was really good moving and screening for the 7 game win streak. Needa more of that.
5.Mobley played awful. He still has the most upside but the swing skill is and always will be shooting. He will always struggle with bruisers but he should be able to punish them with quickness and shooting. Very impossible if he gets pushed off course easily. Need to get that lower body strength up.

Yep, 33 points is mediocre now.
On 24 shots!. He took 11 three pointers, many of them early in the shot clock, and converted all of 4 them.

Meanwhile, Garland scored 27 points on only 14 shots.

It really can't be the case that we have to discuss why offensive efficiency, versus point totals is important after every game. The reality is that when Mitchell hoists up a bunch of 3s early in the shot clock, and misses, those are wasted possessions. In close games it matters.

Good fight back I guess. Well deserved break and ramp it up after all star weekend

Why didn't Cedi or Rubio play?

I almost wish Garland would not get selected for the All-Star game every year. It really gets him going.

When the Cavs were making their big comeback in the 4th it was three guards (DG, DM, and LeVert) and the two bigs. No Okoro, Wade, Green, or Stevens, and if Cedi was available I don't think he would have been in.

We may see more of that lineup.

This is what I expect of the Cavs in the playoffs. They'll come out sputtering, blinded by the lights of their first appearance on the big stage. They'll get way behind but then settle down and claw their way back into the game only to fall a little short as the opposing star (Tatum, Butler, Giannis, Embiid) takes over down the stretch.

The Cavs just need to hang onto that 4th spot and have the home court advantage over New York or Miami. They won't beat Milwaukee or Boston so it doesn't matter which they play.
